I am looking for a 14"x18" Hesston or Case-IH inline baler, and as far as I know they started with the Hesston 4600 or Case IH 8540. Later the produced 3 different types. Can somebody tell me how the Hesston 4600 performs compared to the new types 4550 - 4570 - 4590. In other words: which type comes closest to the Hesston 4600.
Or should I forget about the 4600 or 8540 type buy a newer type?

How exactly do I recognise the new knotters?
Right now I have to balers in mind: a Hesston 4600 and a CaseIH ,both same age 88-89, with low bales because the come from smaller dairy's. The Case IH looks very nice, but like you said Hesston is better involved in the haybusiness....
I have to pay around 6000 CAN$ for each baler, which is still a good prices for olders balers, but in very good shape. If you look for 45xx Hesston they asked from 10,000CAN$ and up. Thanks again.

the newer knotters have as part of the knotter head casting enclosed over the the entire worm and pinion gear shaft, the older knotters the casting attatches only at the top by the pinion gear and at the bottom of the shaft by the worm gear and the head frame is wide as opposed to narrow - hard to describe it if you do not have the pictures to look at so I hope you can figure out what I am describing. The shaft I am talking about is the one that has the gear that engages the large cam gears that rotate and engage the knotters once the knotter clutch is engage to tie a knot. I paid $9000 new for my Case-IH 8530 I think back in 1992 and the 4590 was $20,000 U.S.. The Hesston dealer gave me $5500 for my trade in. The blue book on the 8530 said it was between $3700 - $4200 U.S.

I had a Case-IH 8530, that was the middle capacity model. I bought it almost a dozen years ago and just traded it in on a Hesston 4590, which is the largest capacity out of 3 models. It has the exact width pick-up as the 8530 with an improved wind guard to help in whispy type 2nd cut grass crops. Also, they switched knotters as they did on the latter Case-IH models. Other than that they are the same, as the older models are, same plunger strokes and so forth. If you are going to buy one and had a choice probably better to go with a Hesston over Case since Case is now using New Holland balers and they never really understood square balers very well in the first place.
