John Deere Sickle #4

I've been given a sickle that was my granfather's and apparently he received it from his grandfather. I'm not sure how old it is or where to find out more about it. I've tried looking and seaching the internet and have not found one like it yet.

It is a sickle with large iron wheels. It has a seat in the middle of it and has John Deere stamped in the middle of it along with #4 and then some other numbers that I guess is the serial number. Any idea on where I can find some more info.

Thanks, Duke

Sounds like you have a John Deere #4 (enclosed gear) horse drawn sickle bar mower. Possibly the best horse drawn mower Deere ever made. Probably restorable, and likely still usable (by horse drawn afficionados).
I"m in southern Ohio. If you don"t want it,and are reasonably close by, let me know. It really bothers me to see these used as "Yard Art" (instead of restored, used, and sheltered from the elements).

If you are interested in fixing it up, you can still get an owner's manual from Deere by calling 1-800-522-7448. A bit pricey @ $30.00, but likely worth it, if you are going to work with the mower at all.

Thanks Guys,

I do plan on restoring it and it is sheltered from the elements. I called the 800 number and they have an operation manual and a parts catalog, $30 each. I"m assuming the operators manual would be my best bet.

Any ideas on where I could find a picture and possibly some idea on colors?

Right now I can barely pick out what was probably yellow and some green. But for the most part everything looks brown from the rust. However, it is in very good shape and I can remember my grandfather using it a few years before he died. Late 80"s
