I just bought a JD14T baler that looks complete and was shedded. How old is it and is it a desireable one to use? I have a market for square bales and a $100 baler appeals to me. Are there any drawbacks to this machine?

this fell on deaf ears last week...is there a vertical piece of sheet steel in front of the stationary knife?
My stationary knife sticks out about 1" into the opening to the chamber & cannot see from the manual if I'm missing a guard for it or something.

There good old balers but can be a pain in the A$$ if things like the plunger safty isn't working etc. You can still get the books for them from JD and if you buy it thats the first thing you need to do. Shoot I still have 2 of them and a 24T. Knotters one them are the biggest place that you might have trouble on.

Dave,

The 24T and 224T needles are different. The 224T needles are quite a bit heavier and a different part number.

BUT the 24T needles will work on a 224T. I didn't believe it myself until I tried as a last resort. The boneyard had only one set of needles left and I got them.

Someone should start casting aftermarket ones for these old balers. Maybe they could be made out of polyurethane or something too..be cheaper and easier.

John

Don't know. But I do know there the same as on a 14T, been there done that before. Plus the needles on the 24T are gone but I do have one or 2 on the 14T

You measure those needles up six ways from Sunday and send me a couple of good clear pictures (not like that lousy Polaroid one-step one of the Farmall B that looked like it was shot thru the inside of a dirty Coke bottle!) you might have a customer for them needles. My 224T parts mower is needing a needle to be running again. I still have hopes of putting a second baler out there and getting done before dark for once.

Thats one of 2 reason I went to the round bales. The other reason I went to the round bales is because I just can't lift them any more. It hard to find a baler that only makes 35 lbs bales LOL

As others said, its about 50 years old.

Only drawbacks are it has kind of a narrow pickup and won't eat as much hay as fast as a new square baler.

I have one, and have fussed with it a couple summers and have enjoyed it ( ok I cussed it some but I think I have the issue identified, I should have looked at the tucker finger adjustment a year and a half ago, but I didn't know what tucker fingers were at that point )

They will make a nice bale, just make sure to feed a decent sized windrow into it. If the windrow is to thing you will get a bit of a banana bale, but most balers are like that.

If you try and feed to much to fast, the shear bold on the flywheel will break so have some of those handy. I changed a lot of those this summer teaching my wife to drive the tractor. =)

If this has been shedded and is complete you got a heck of a deal. This baler was a late 50s eraly 60s model. They were an excellent baler. Ive baled 1000s of bales with one on a Vermont hill farm. It was powered by a single cylinder Wisconson engine and we towed with a 1958 TO 35. This one we bought new in 57.I wish I could find one for that kind of money. Buy and it and go to baling. I just got a 24t for $300. It was also sheded and has been used for the past couple years. I hope it works out ok for me. I want to bale about 1500-3000 bales a year.
