grinder not mixing

On our farm we have two grinder mixers. One is New Holland and one is a Gehl,well we started grinding and the nh wasn't mixing the feed was not going down it was staying in the cone and the sides. The gehl had done this a while ago so we stopped using it. I got inside it and wire brushed it and sprayed some rust converter on it but still didn't help anyone have any ideas on how to fix this thanks in advance.

I bought a used Gehl 120, I had the same problem. Near the bottom of the mixing auger their is an agitation paddle, my old one was about 4" short of reaching the side of the mixer. someone on this board reccomended replacing this I can"t remember who it was but Thank You very much. The new one has a 1/2" or less clearance to the side of the mixer. It mixes great now. Cost around $30.00

My grinder has a extra kicker on the bottom of the vertical augur for high ruffage material.

Wet ear corn does that on my Gehl, just how it is with wet stuff. Otherwise, shouldn't be a problem, and your cone shouldn't have needed any brushing/ painting, the grain going through it will polish it up just fine. So, not sure what the problem is, you aren't letting the machine sit outside unused for long periods, are you? That cone is like a plow bottom, it's self-polishing, but you don't ever want to let them get rusty. As well, you don't want paint on it, should be shiny metal.

Sounds like a problem in how you are using it, not in the machine itself? can you explain better what you are grinding, the size screen, and why the cone got anything other than polished to begin with?

What are you grinding?Ear corn,or shell?It could be that the screen is for small grain & grinding too fine causing caking.Also, those machines need to be kept inside.With the 15,000square ft. of shed space we have,some machinery has to sit outside,but the mixer-mill always goes in.~brad

I agree..... ....Feed grinders have to be sheded! I like to get everything inside a building, but a feed grinder is a must! IMO, you run some corn cobs through it to polish it if you got any. I always ran some cobs through a fairly larger screen and they did a good job cleaning up the inside the tank. It sounds to me like you also need a larger screen for the material your grinding. May I ask what your running through it, and what type of animals is the feed feeding?

I assume you think the material is sticking to the sides and that is why it is not mixing - we never had that problem but I can remember in the manual when ours was new it said to take 5 or 10 bushel of corn cobs or shelled corn - let that mix for a while and discard it - to get id of all oil and metal bits and stuff and get ready to start mixing -

As far as your problem get some real dry shelled corn - usr a very large screen or no screen at all - put about 5 or 10 bushel in and let it mix - the sharp edges and large kernels should clean up the inside in no time -

you could also try it on a hillside or flat ground (whichever is opposite of what you are doing now) just to get the inside shined up then go back to normal
