disc mower and cornstalks

I was wondering if someone who had a disk mower, and wanted to bale cornstalks, could use the disc mower in the process? How would the mower hold up? Would the stalks be too long for the rake and baler w/o further chopping? I once saw a picture of someone cutting cornstalks with an old Farmall M and sickle mower, how well would that work?

I have a NI 272 Cut-Ditioner that would work very well for cutting corn stalks. The conditioning is dependent on the ground speed. The slower you go the finer it will cut the stalks and the more palletable for the livestock. The blades are very robust.

The only downside is that this unit is a power hog and it is likely more than an Farmall M could handle. Really this machine would like to have 50+ HP with a really good pto clutch. My Uncle used this machine for ~25 years behind his Minnie Moline without too many issues.

I wouldnt use the disc mower in stalks, not what the blades are designed for. You might have broken blades flying at you.
Rotary mow then rake and bale, rake will do a better job after the mower and the stalks will be better for the animals, not as course so to say. We round bale stalks and do it this way with good results.
Just dont use the disc mower in the stalks please, ive seen the blades come off broken, or at least the results from it and it can be bad

It will work and it has been done. The best results that I have seen are behind a rotary mower followed by a wheel rake. Stalk shredders also work good. The disc mower is not ideal because it does not cut the material up as well as the others do, but it will work. I would imagine that running a disc mower in stalks is also not as cost effective as a rotary mower.

I used to mow cornstalks with a Super C and 7 ft cutter bar. Kind of needed to mow against the direction they were leaning. Regular rake and square baled them. Did this one year when cornstalks were massive & summer feed had been scarce, Worked fine. I'm sure a disc mower would be even better for the job. Conditioning rolls even better.
