I know where there are a couple of abandoned 2-row mounted corn pickers that I am unsure as to their make and model. There are some remnants of red paint on them so I was thinking that they may be McCormick Deering or International. I had no idea as to the model as they are noticeably smaller than the McCormick Deering 2M, then I found an opperator's manual for a McCormick Deering 34HM-20 2-row mounted corn picker. The picker seems to match the pictures in the manual, however I would like more positive proof. Is there some ID stamped somewhere on the picker that would say exactly what it's make and model was? Also, if anyone has any info at all on the McCormick Deering 34HM-20 corn picker, such as years made and quantity produced, I would be gratefull.

I am well ware of the corn picker. I had one mounted on a 400 and I believe that is what the number of the picker indicates..3 for 300 4 for the 400 M for the M tractor.... and it is about the same as the #24 picker except that it had a web above the husking portion of the rollers which were at the back end of the rollers. Years ago there was a very inventive farmer 6 miles from me that had a 24 picker and installed a web chain like what the 2 m and 2mh pickers had and put it his 24 picker. I dont know if he got anything from International for his idea but International put it in the 34M-20 picker..If you are familiar with the 24, one of its problems was plugging on the back end of the rollers, there were a number of farmers that got their hands and fingers in the rollers that were at the back of the machine. They could stick their hand up in there from the seat and pull the stalks that were plugged....when the stalk caught the stalks they were pulling on caught the discharge rollers they could not let go fast enough and so the result was fingers and hands lost. I had a 34M-20 that was like new and like I said I put it on a 400. The 400 had a hard time pulling the picker, it actually pulled harder than a mounted 2MH, which I bought later in farming. If I were you and found a 34M-20 picker difinitely buy it for they are a scarce piece of equipment. I sold mine for $100. and it was like new..course this was in the 60-70's...the reason I remember is because the man raised watermelon and paid me in $1.00 bills out of a barrel that he put his watermelon money. Sure wish I had that picker back for some unknown reason..have never seen one since. I didnt mean to make this so long its because I was just thinking about it the other day and didnt think anyone else would remember the picker.thanks for reminding me of it again. One more thing the 24 pickers rollers would spread apart when picking, thus not enough pressure to bring the stalk down threw the rollers. On the 20 picker they installed what farmers called a plow beam shaped in a u over the top of the rollers to keep the rollers together to help pull the stalks down threw the rollers...I remember Dad had a 24 and would work on it most Sunday afternoons trying to get it to work better. Nothing like the 2m OR 2MH or 2MHD for pickers.

Thanks for your reply, Itchy. Since I have never used a corn picker, period, I have no experience with them and appreciate your advice and tips.

Regards, Kirk

Are you sure that is a 34M-20?..I was thinking maybe a 20-34M that would follow the 20 series.

No, I am not sure, I will examine it more carefully tomorrow to see if I can locate any identification numbers.

I just examined the pickers and determined that they are both McCormick #24.
