Argh! 513 spreader still with weak sprocket

The firewood spreader started to clunk on its second light load. I shut down and surely enough, the idler sprocket at the front left was canted around at an unnatural angle, though nothing was broken yet.

The stud on which this sprocket rotates has been welded up with a chunk of bolt as the shaft. When I assembled the apron it was bent to where I needed to shim it with washers so that it would carry the chain.

Will another, better welding job work, or should I buy a replacement part, assuming that it is harder steel? The steel behind the sprocket plate is now a new piece of 3/16", strong and true.

What if I welded in a 3/4" rod from side to side, joining the two sprocket carriers?

Thanks,

Rod

The New Holland 513 spreader front idlers
were on a short stub shaft. If you are
bending or breaking you have another problem. These will not bend or break unless
something (like the apron-or)is causing it.
Trust me we sold hundreds of this design at
our NH dealership.

In return for forty-five minutes of frozen fingers and five dollars I obtained a left sprocket and holder in perfect condition. Whenever it warms up a little I'll put it on.

Hi Rod, I am just taking a stab here but on my New Holland and my neighbour's New Holland there is a shaft that is the width of the apron bed that carries those sprockets, both front and rear. The shaft turns both left and right sprocket simultaneously and if I understand your picture did someone replace the shaft with a short stud? It appears the chain needs a good slobbering of used motor oil to get it to flex easily. If you can manufacture a shaft that will reach from sprocket to sprocket you will have the solution in my opinion...Good luck..Mike in Exeter Ontario

What models? My new to me 516 looks exactly like his, stubs. The NI & MN spreaders I had/have use full cross shafts.

might help assessing the situation. Woulldn't want to see you strengthen one part just so something else more expensive breaks!

I plan a raid on the local junkyard tomorrow, wrench in hand. There is another New Holland spreader there, and I'll see if I can liberate a sprocket unit.

I have a 516 I just got, all my other spreaders have had full cross shafts for the idlers, was wondering how those stubs would last.....
