Auction Deals... feeling bad....

Has anyone felt bad about the deals they got at an auction?

I guy I knew had a small stroke and isn't 100% functional anymore. This guy wasn't very honest, and was known to steal at times. Dispite his failings he would help you when you needed it. he let me borrow his Mo-CO all summer last year for nothing(Hesston PT10).

He wanted $1200 before the auction, I offered $500 but he turned me down. So at auction I bought it for $150. Bought a 220 stick welder for $60 a hay wagon for $150. But you know, after initial satisfaction with my purchases I felt bad for the guy.

He is flat broke... Guy was trying to bid on his own horses, registered Qtr horses(that sold for $100 - $300). Auctioneer wouldn't take his bid. He was being kicked out of his place the next day.

The guy was almost in tears to see all of his stuff scatter to the wind. Kind of put a damper on my mood.

Some other Prices:

12KW PTO Generator: $400
3pt JD 5 bar Rake $150
JD 336 (rough but should work): $150
4000 Watt gas generator: $75
10 Ton Gear: $125
IHC 470 16' disc: $175
1990 JD 2955 - Very Nice, but motor stuck - $7200

Joe in IN, your compassion is refreshing. Most of us should practice it more.

Most folks go to an auction hoping to find a bargain. If they want to pay top dollar they go to a dealership or machinery jockey. As you said, the guy was known to sometimes steal. Sounds like the lowlife finally got what he had coming to him. Go out and enjoy your new purchases and brag about your bargains instead of whining about it. Pete

I've been to some farm auctions like this. It sounds to me like maybe people who came to the auction and bought stuff knew him. I was at one last summer. The farmer had passed away 6 years ago and was known as a great guy and a hard worker. His equipment went for a pretty good price as it was all stored indoors and was in decent shape. His 80 acres went for 2 million dollars. I was feeling mostly bad for his grandson who watched as his heritage was auctioned off to the highest bidder. The next day when I picked up my stuff, I helped him and the widow clean things up for several hours.

Some people would say he got what he deserved. You are obviously a better person than that. The way he lived life will probably haunt him the rest of his days. Sounds like he had his good points, but enough bad ones to have few friends. Since you had free use of his MOCO for a season and you were willing to pay more initially, I think I would give him what ever extra I felt was right. But you should do what you think will make you feel right, not what some one else recommends.

Well, nice of you to care.

Was an auction, he coulda taken your offer, he didn't. If you weren't there, he woulda got less.

It's a wash, it turned out the way it did. You got a deal on one item, most of the other stuff was about right as things would be 'here'.

Joe, feeling sorry for someone who not only is down, but almost out, shows you have good character. Personally, I probably have a little more than a lot of folks, so I would go over and give him the additional $350. You perhaps are not be in that position. However, consider that sometimes, we would better to have discretionary funds go to a local individual in need, rather than unknown hurricane victims whom may have shot at police and national guard troops. If you do not want to give him the difference between the auction price and what you tendered, consider offering to pay a little rental for last summer.

I've found a lot of bargains at auctions, sometimes felt bad about the seller getting it in the shins..... ...but- if you were not there, someone else would have gotten it even cheaper. So you did the guy a favor by showing up and making that final bid.

That's the way it goes sometimes. Can't say as I would lose any sleep over it. If you see the guy needs something and your bothered, get it for him.
It's just life....no more, no less.
