Slat Moldboard Plow Question.

I have been looking for some Farmall 2 pt. fast hitch implements for my Super C tractor. I have recently located a 2 bottom Slat moldboard plow. What are the advantages or disadvantages of a slat moldboard plow and in what type of soils are they meant to be used in? Haven't really seen them around where I'm located. If you're looking for a regular moldboard 2pt. plow, I do know of a fellow that has one for sale. He used it on a 200 Farmall. If you are interested, I can get his phone# for you. It's Located in MN.

Thanks for your post on the regular moldboard plow for the small prong fast hitch tractors. I would like the contact information and would like to discuss it with him. I was checking the slat moldboard out since it is near another item I will be making a trip to pickup. Minnesota this time of year might be a little much if the stories I heard are true about not seeing the ground until next spring. I've got the C20 FastHitch Plow with slatted moldboards and the Plow Chief points. IH calls the slats "High Speed" Moldboards. These work particularly well in clay or heavy sod. Once you plow a field a couple of times they seem just like any other moldboard. No problems with them. They were considered an "option" when the C20 came out. BobG in VA

Thanks Bob, do you know if the points and shares are still available for your plow? I believe what I have located is the same model plow but is in another state and haven't seen it yet. I believe in your post you are saying that this plow would work in any soil but certainly works better in sticky or clay soil then a full moldboard plow? There were two different types of points/shears. Older type were Plow Chiefs and had a two part set up with the chisel point separate from the lateral shear. These points are hard to find and expensive if NOS (I got two new ones off Ebay at different times for reasonable $ but also saw one go for $105 before shipping.) Second type is the Super Chief points, these are one piece and should still be avail but can also be spendy. Have your seller send you pictures of the points. New Plow Chiefs look like a harpoon while the super chiefs remind me of Dearborn plow points. good luck and let us know what happens. BobG in VA

We have an allis with those that we use in Ky tobacco ground, which is good dark ground with a few patches of clay here and there. No problems with it.

Thank you for your post as I am getting an education on this type of plow. My dad bought a lot of farm equipment when he got out of the army in Kentucky and had it all moved here to our farm in Missouri. That was back in the early 1950's and one item he had was a slat moldboard plow for a Ford 8N. For some reason he got rid of it and got a different type of plow but I think it was because of the type of shears and not the moldboard. As I remember that Ford plow had a long snoot on the front of the shear which made them hard to pull for the 8N. I think they also had to be sharpened by a blacksmith. The one he replaced it with had disposable shears I believe. Thanks again for your response. Hal

They scour better in sticky ground, but small stones can get stuck between the slats in rocky ground.

Thanks for your response. Does this type of plow work as well as a full moldboard in normal soil or are they just for the sticky soil you noted? I live in Missouri and we have generally fairly nice soil here on our farm but do have some areas with some clay above the bottom fields. It just seems this is the type of plow I continue to locate for my Super C fast hitch tractor and maybe those tractors were used more in areas where sticky soil or clay was common. Generally, larger tractors were used to plow in the area where we are located except on the smaller farms. Thanks again for your post and any follow-up you provide. Hal

They work fine in 'normal' soil- just better suited for the sticky ground. I was raised on a sandy loam farm with regular moldboard plows, but when Dad bought the new WD45 in '56, he got a 3-16 mounted slat plow because we did have a bit of clay in some low ground. We had no rocks or stones. The slat plow scoured well everywhere, including the clay ground. Nowadays, we don't see slat plows here. Started on my own 33 years ago, different area (heavy clay soils)- very little plowing for over 10 years. Just disc chisels. Takes lotza hp but a good match for the full-time farmers that need to cover lotza ground.
