New Holland 276 Baler Hesston 10' Swather

Well, the guy I was going to hire to hay my 20 acres is retiring. The 20 acres is just native grass and I was going to only have it baled once a year. He wants to sell me his equipment for $2,000. He said he has spent $1,000 recently on parts, etc. on them (u-joints, chains, teeth, etc.).

They are a New Holland 276 Wire Tie Baler and a Hesston 10' Swather (not sure of the model). They are field ready and he just got done using them.

I only have about 20 acres that I would be haying. I am VERY inexperienced and don't have a barn to put them in for cover although the weather here is pretty decent as far as dry and rust free.

I have the money but not sure if that is a good deal or not and whether that would be a good setup to have for 20 acres or not. I not sure if I want to get in the hay business and don't have any livestock to feed the hay to. I also don't have anyone lined up that would buy the hay and no place to put it. He had some contacts and was going to just buy my 1/2 of the hay and sell it for me.

I have a Farmall M tractor and also not sure if it would be enough of a tractor to handle them.

Thanks in advance for any input you might have.

Sounds to me like you answered your own question,no storage no buyers. whats the point then,all this will do for you is tie up the money with absolutely no return. And especially for only one baling a season besides. let some one bale it and sell it to them period. UNLESS you change your setup. YOU HAVE STORAGE AND YOU HAVE CLEINTS PERIOD.

You already know more about these two items than most other used equipment you will come across. If they are truly field-ready, the price is somewhere between fair and a good deal for you. The limiting factor will actually be the Farmall M. Live PTO would be a huge advantage, and the Lift-All may struggle with the header lift on the swather. If you are inclined to make your own hay and can tolerate wire bales, I say go for it.

People that have issues with wire bales have never baled them. Wire bale are easier to tolerate than string bales. It's easier to keep the baler operating and the bales are easier to handle. The wire bales are the only way to go in Texas. You will find it hard to sell the string bales.

I don't have "issues" with wire bales. However, I wanted to be sure Nathan considered that thay are different from twine tie balers in many respects. I have 10 years dealership experience working on NH balers in a five or six county area and know of NO wire tie balers in this neck of the woods. I have handled my share of Canadian wire tie bales in my younger days, and I disagree with you about handling ease.
