Help - Hesston Conditioner

Need your experiences with Hesston Pull Type Sickle Mower Conditioner Model 1090, Serial No. 6132. My neighbor just bought at auction, has ordered Operator Manual and Parts Manual. I will be helping him with some repairs and just getting it feild ready. The "wobble mechanism" seems to be broken loose from the frame, allowing it to shake back and forth when running. Any tricks to working on this thing? What are you good/bad experiences with this "haybine"?

Tom, I think its just like my 1091 so I'm not sure what your talking about. Has the gear box broken loose from its mounting or are you concerned about the swaybar? If its the wobble of the swaybar its supposed to since its not attached to the frame and converts drive (circuliar) motion to back & forth motion of the sickle bar.
That being said that doesn't mean theres not something wrong(worn out)that may give the appearance of detachment.
I think if you turn it slowly you can see how it works and maybe you don't have a problem at all or you'll be able to see where the problem is.
These are good machines and can take a lot of abuse but they do wear out. Due to the conditioning action of these machines grass hay cut with them may take slightly longer(1/2 day) to dry than "conditioned by roll" grass. Alfalfa or clover drying time will be the the same as rolled. Good luck..

Thanks Bob for the info. Not sure what you mean about the "condditioning action" of the machine? This 1090 model has the 2 large rollers that crimp the hay, very similar to NH haybines, JD and others. Is your 1091 like this?

The frame support pieces that hold the "gear box with the large counterweight looking flywheel" have been welded once and the welds are now broken. This "box" is right behind the mechanism that converts rotation into the back-and-forth motion of the sickle. Maybe I can get some pictures of it. Tom

Tom, the 1091 has rolls but the top roll is a metal scarifying roll that does not mash with the lower roll and it also turns at a different speed. The idea being that the upper roll will scarf the stems without crushing them. It seems to work very well and the rolls generally never wear out.
Remove the gearbox, which is the same as mine, and fix it correctly. The chances are that it was repaired in a rush and not welded well. Get a welder that not only knows how to weld but who will use the proper rod. Mark where you want any gussets or re-enforcement added. Good luck...

Thanks Bob. I will check the rollers on this one, probably the same. As you suggested, we plan to remove the gearbox, belts, and anything else around the area; then clean it all up and design a new support plat, strong weld with gussets. Right now we are waiting on Operator manual and Parts manual; ordered both for $27 through dealer in Hillsboro, TX. Thanks again.
