My pto cover is missing, I assume this is to protect me from an exploding joint? Or is it there just to block from the spiining shaft? Just trying to determine how much importance to assign to getting or making one.

Thanks

I'm probably going to be beating an already dead horse...
The PTO Sheild is there for a reason - to protect you. When I ended up having my mother do a parts run to my friendly local AGCO/Massey-Ferguson Dealer, because it was on her way to Cincinatti, It was number one on hers as well as my priority list to get a PTO Shield for my MF 135.
It should be too for your Oliver. Mine cost all of 7 bucks. Oliver is one of the heritage brands of AGCO. For your family's sake go visit it and spend the money. 7 bucks is cheap when you compare it to whatever medical/funeral expenses when something does go terribly wrong. Most farmers took them off because they became too cumbersome. And, some of them were seriously hurt when they did screw up or some of them died a nasty, painful and gruesome death.

Do the right thing - spend 7-20 bucks on something that might some day save your life. Your family will thank you for it.

That shield is there to keep you from getting caught in the PTO and also on some implements such as trip implements, you have a string that runs to the operator's platform and the shield is nice to keep the string from getting caught in it. Don't feel bad about not knowing the "exact" reason behind that. You know, the manufacturer could have made it to keep your clothes and fingers, etc out, but I bet there is probably someone somewhere that can say that it has saved their heads from something flying off, but the chances of getting hit by something there opposed to say a stick from a bush hog are a lot less. A lot of older tractors didn't have them, so they are not a must have to run, but then again a lot of older tractors don't have roll bars either. If you have the money and will be using it as a work tractor, make one, fix the one on there, or find a new/used replacement. I need to fix one and put it back on when I get a chance. Don't get discouraged by someone else's smart opinion, they had to ask someone to learn too (hopefully they didn't learn the hard way). Keep asking the questions, I think anyone on here would agree that they would rather you ask a question about a shield or safety than to just reason an answer that may be wrong and end up costing you or someone else's life. When it comes to safety, ask, you may be given a hard time, but there are more people here to help you out than to cut you down. Good luck with your oliver.

I don"t know what Oliver had, but the Deeres used a hinged shield. You could flip it up to have more room to connect the shaft to the tractor, then flop it back down. If I were to make one, it"d be one like that.

JB, there are thousands of those things setting around born yards all over Kansas and the rest of the Midwest.
If you don't understand the importance of that piece then you really shouldn't be operating that equipment however, if you get your sleeve or pant leg caught in it with 100 hp it won't even know your there until it spits out your unrecognizable parts. As a starter, since I don't know where your located you could try Hilltop Tractor Salvage in Lamar, Missouri. They can probably ship you one tomorrow.
Good Luck....

To respond to "understanding the importance" of that piece, I believe the mere fact I am asking the question shows I am trying to understand the importance, so I see little value in your opinion that I shouldn't be operating the equipment. Way to encourage a safety question. Also, nobody has to warn me about getting tangled in a spinning shaft, doubt I'd even get off the seat without disengaging the pto. That wasn't my question. Nobody has mentioned what I was worried about, which is getting hit in the back of the head with a broken joint. I guess I need not worry since nobody mentioned it.

JB, the answer to your question is "no the shaft won't fly up and hit you in the head" That thing is there to keep things away from it including you and what you have on.
No you don't understand the importance of it because if you operate any equipment for long your going to have to get off the tractor with the pto running at some time. Thats the way things are.

BobMo, Aren't you being a little harsh? Your reply "JB, the answer to your question is "no the shaft won't fly up and hit you in the head"" I know a guy who had that very thing happen except it hit his back and took his overalls off. I am pretty sure that all of us (you and I included) who operate equipment have done foolish things at one time or another and have gotten by with it. "That's the way things are" Does that mean that we (you) are unfit to be on equipment?

Yes, I was being a little bit harsh, but only in the interest of safety. You of course are right we have all done things that are unsafe. However when you say you'll probably never dismount the tractor with the pto engaged we both know that isn't going to work. If you operate normal equipment you're going to have to dismount many times with the pto engaged. Hence "Thats the way things are". He should just get the shield, it's such a minor thing.
On the safety side the more things you have in place (such as pto shielding) the better your chances of getting away with something less than intelligent. Good luck to all...

I'm trying to understand what part he is missing. The pto shaft covers typically go with the implement, not the tractor. So, if he is missing some part from his _tractor_, what part?????

Just trying to understand, so we all talking the same part?

Paul, it's my understanding that he's talking about the shield thats mounted to the tractor. As you know sometimes guys temporarily remove them for various reasons. Probably the most often reason is for mounting an auxiliary pump but there are others.
If thats not what he's talking about he's asking the question incorrectly. Bob

Yea, I understand now. Think I've only seen one Oliver with that shield, and Oliver was very popular around here. Frankly I didn't know Oliver had such a shield..... :)

I'm not saying one should run without, mind you.

Won't make a bit of diference what color or make, if it grabs your sleeve and wraps your arm up. Don't even get close to a spinning shaft. Make some thing to cover it.
