HYDRAULIC FLUID FOR DEARBORN LOADER

I have a Dearborn 19-8 FEL on a 1950 forn 8N. Can anybody tell me what type of hydraulic fluid I should use? I just purchased Anti-wear 30 wt since I do have some leak-down.

I have an 8N and a 4000 Ford and NH dealer says to use their #134 oil in every thing except the engine. There's a lot of stuff went over the dam since those tractors and implements were made and the chemical compositions of oils have changed. So one can't go by the old manuals. Just my NH dealers opinion, said to be from the horses mouth, I think that was the end?

If your loader is plumbed with it's own pump and reservoir, it probably uses standard hydraulic fluid (like AW46),not trans/hydraulic fluid that's used in the rearaxle/transmission/hydraulic system of the 8N. You might check with you local NH dealer and see if they can help. There are lots of questions about Dearborn loaders so someone on one of these forums may have an old Dearborn manual. Look on ebay 'cuz I see them there occaisionally. You can usually find AW46 oil at Costco. Hope this helps you.

you did NOT say how this loader is plumed or how it's run dose it have it's own hyd. system or is it run with the pump inside the tractor or dose it have a front mounted pump and is the oil in it's own tank or dose it come from the rear of the tractor. this will make a BIG difference as to the oil you should use

Sorry, I should have been more specific. I am guessing that the loader is about 1950 vintage. It has its own pump that runs off of the front of the engine by a shaft that comes through the hand crank in the grille. The frame of the loader is the resevoir. The oil that I drained out was fairly thick and clear with a golden tint for the most part.

I have a Dearborn 19-22 FEL of the same design and vintage. The manual for it specifies the same oil as used in the engine. I'm running mine with plain old R&O hydraulic fluid.

Why are you asking this question if you have already purchased what you think will do the trick. Leak down is best over come by repair not heavier oil. If leakdown is minimial ignore it if its bad get to the root of the problem, fix it, then you can use manufactures recommendation.

Most old items used 80/90 weight hyd oil, that is about all there was back then.

The new universal hyd oils generally work better esp in cold weather, tho they tend to be thinner & may make the leak issue worse.

Some few old systems used the same 30 wt oil as the crankcase would use - Belarus still does I believe - but that is more rare.

i am one of them old timers but never have seen 80-90 wt. hyd. oil!!80-90 gear oil but not spec. hyd .
