My brother and I want to restore/operate a small, 4 - 7 foot pull combine, about 1940's to 1950's model, but I know very little about them. Can anyone tell me what models were made back then, including their size and years made. Also, if you know what models may be around yet, tucked away in some farmer's barn for the past 30 or so years, and some idea or guess at what they would go for. Thanks.

I have a Dearborn Woods Bros (Ford, basically) with the 6' head and a Ford farming engine that is the same as in a Ford 8N tractor. It has been sitting out for a while but the metal parts all appear to be good. I don't know if the engine is free or not, but that should be an easy fix anyway. The wood, canvas and belts are all toast.
The good news is that it is located in Western Montana (Thompson Falls) which is not too far from Orofino. I have delusions about restoring it some day but would be happt to sell it to someone who wanted to restore it.

I just picked up a JD 30 combine at an auction in Iowa for $230. Had both the 7' straight-cut and pick-up heads a is in real nice shape. From the mid to late 50's. Plan on using it for some oats next year.

Massey Harris produced the Clipper model in the 40s up to and including 1951.It was a 6' cut pull type offered as a PTO or Wisconsin engine driven model. It was one of the very best machines back then.I was extremely lucky to find and buy one recently. Its a 1950 model in excellent condition.NO!It is not for sale. The Clipper 50 was introduced in 1952.It was offered as either a 6'or a 7'cut.
John Deere produced the model 12A in those days too.It also had a good reputation. My first combime was an Allis Chalmers model All Crop .It proceeded the model AC 60.I later owned an AC 60. My personal opinion is these three combines were the best offered in those days. There seems to be several AC 60s and some Deere 12As that have survived the years and the cutting torches.Fewer still of the Massey Harris Clipper models. Any of the three would make good restoration projects.

Thanks for the info and recomendations. Is the MH Clipper wide with a side discharge, similar to the AC 60, or rear diacharge, like JD 12A? Any photos anywhere on the internet that you know of?

Clipper is a side discharge. The clean grain chute that filles the grain tank is rotated to the left and then a door is opened in the botton of the grain tank.If someone can tell me how to post pictures here at YT, I'll post some pictures of it.

What size is the AC 66? Does it have it's own engine? What are the specs on the Massey unit - model, size, year, condition, engine or PTO powered?

RR; Did you find pic on www.ricksales.com. Ac unit is 66 inch wide cut. Pto powered. The other unit has its own motor. Believe it was 50 inch cut or in that area always shedded and the motor should be good usable. RickL

Hey R R,
Where are you located at? Seems like them things are hard to find. If you decide on an A/C 60, let me know. I will try to look and see where they still have canvas for it. I know that there are/were very few of them in Central Texas are in the 80's. Might be a few of them around now. There are two of them at the farm, both stored outside like everything else. One was operational, and the other was for parts.

later days mate,
Jim

Dad bought his first AC pull-type in 1949- a Model 60. JD, Case, Moline, IH and others had their own models too. Don't know their numbers, but others will kick in with that info. Many are still around.
