Can a New Idea Corn Picker be used or converted in any way to harvest roasting ears such as sweet corn? I have a few acres of sweet corn and would love to be able to mechanically pick roating ears. Any suggestions or different ideas would be appreciated.

All of the new idea pickers that I have owned are too hard on sweet corn. When I was a kid my Dad had a IH model 24 mounted two row picker that had no husking bed. It did a fair job in sweet corn. Dad told me a dealer had told him that they offered special snapping rolls for that machine for use in sweet corn. He had used it for many years on field corn. He always grew a few rows of popcorn and sweet corn. He had the picker mounted on a model h that was only used for that reason. Somebody must have information on some of the pull types. Maybe the old cases that had no husking beds may work too?? Good luck Bill

You need a picker without a husking bed. I've heard of, perhaps it was an Oliver model, that could be set up for sweet corn picking. They still are very hard on the ears.

There are specialty units made by a small harvesting company that do a good job of picking soft ear corn. You pay plenty for them - but they use canvases to protect the ears, and strip the ear off. Saw a picture of one here on this site a couple years ago.

I have several manuals for NI Pickers, & shellers with info on all attachments. Nowhere did I find any info for sweet corn. A typical NI picker is going to handle the crop pretty harshly. As a matter of fact several people refer to them as the best corn planter there is!!! The ear is jerked down into the snapping roll pretty hard to snap the ear off. If its wet (like sweet corn) it will probably squeeze between the rolls, & ruin the ear clogging up the machine as it goes! There may be a way; But I dont know of any unless You want to harvest dry seed!
