I am contemplating purchasing a shredder for corn stalks but I am seeking advise whether to get the side cutting knife or the cup style. Can anyone give me some advise who has had some experience? Are there some real lemons in the marketplace that I should avoid purchasing? Thank you very much in advance! Don

If you are looking at a Sunmaster shredder- the lemons would the the first one or two series of gearbox that they used. By the third time, they were ok. Need to check with a dealer to verify which box is on the machine.

Here's what I know. Dad had a worn out IH 60 with side knives. The knives were held on with a short section of shaft, I think 1". When you changed knives you could rotate the shaft to wear the other side. The neighbor had an equally worn JD model 27, I think, where the knives were held on with D rings. When the D rings wore it threw the knives off. Both the IH and JD had a center bearing and would leave a narrow uncut strip in the middle which was especially noticeable when mowing grass. Both were also driven with a set of belts on each end. There were some MC shredders in the area with cup knives. These were much heavier built and didn't have center bearings. Only bad thing I heard about them is they took more power to turn and you had to be careful not to overload them as they would burn the single set of belts off easily.
