Rear Wheel Assist Tires Backwards?

Why do I see so many rear wheel assisted combines with the tread on backwards? Does this help with traction more than the "right" way?

The main reason for tractor type treads spinning backwards isn't for pullen, it's to keep the tires spinning to aid in steering. Much easier to keep the combine straight in mud/slick conditions. Also not all combines with ag tractor tread are rear wheel assist-see above.

You are on the right track but most of you dont have the correct answer, The main reason rear rear assist or even 2 wheel drive combines turn the rear tires around is to prevent errosion. This holds true even on 2 wheel drive. If the tires are turned the proper way and you harvest up hill and the soil is muddy, in the spring you will have a gully started were the track was, but by turning them around it deflects the water off the track

I've seen a few guy run the front drive tires on backward. They say they don't get as much traction and get stuck easier but are usually able to back out after getting stuck.

Neighbor ran a Gleaner E with 12' platform in beans for years with a set of duals on, inside pair facing forward and outside pair facing backward. Combine didn't sink as easy because of the extra floatation, but I don't know if the reversed tread really helped in getting out of the mud or not. From what I remember, when he got stuck, he got STUCK!

I never really got up close & know this to be 100% true, but my understanding is JD found it was cheaper to use the same rear tractor-grip tires for all their combines. They put them on 'backwards' on the non-rear assist tires because they turn better that way, and put them on the right way for an actual rear-assist unit?

That would make sense too, since directional tires are often marked with an arrow, showing which way to turn whether under power or free-wheeling. Also, if the rear tires on a combine are lugged, it takes a close look at the axle to see if it really is a 4wd. From a distance it is hard to tell, especially if it's a hydro drive inside the dish of the wheel.

When you go in too far and need to back out, the rear-facing wheels will pull better. Going forward, they help some, but don't leave you where you can't get out by yourself.
