Painting Cornhead

I bought an old John Deere 443 cornhead. Tin is in good shape with little rust but the paint on the snoots is pretty worn off.

I am keeping it shedded but still want to paint it for protection and asthetic purposes. I don't have a good air compressor and paintgun yet and this is hardly a showpiece.

If I just sand off what little rust there is and then buy a few cans of John Deere/Rustoleum spraypaint will that look really bad? Is it even worth doing or will a couple days of running corn rip it all off?

Paul, When I owned an all metal corn head I always painted the snouts and any other wear spots after harvest was complete. Power washed first blow dry with compressed air and used an airless sprayer. Looked ok but it wore off with the next harvest. Own a plastic head now.

Why not just buy a can of Slip-Plate graphite and paint it on the wear areas with a brush? It will keep it from rusting, and when you go do corn with it, the graphite will polish up and you'll have a nice slick surface for quite awhile. Paint will just get whacked right off again. I put Slip-Plate on the nose of my New Idea corn picker where the galvanized has worn off. Works good.

I WOULD GET A GALLON OF JD PAINT AND MOP IT ON WITH A BRUSH
