Old Combine Question

I am looking into buying an old combine for 80 acres of wheat. I may put in 40 acres of oats also.
Whatever I end up with will see a limited amount of use.
I don't need anything big, or a speedburner, just an honest machine that will do a couple of days work per year.

There are alot of old Massey Harris, Gleaner and John Deere 55's in the trees around here (Kansas)

Which old combine will suit me best. Parts availability (new or used) is essential.

Any suggestions and comments will be appreciated.

Gleaners are hard to beat. I bought a C-II on LP in Dodge City about 5 years which I use for fescue. I get most of my part at a dealer in Mount Hope KS. The C-II I bought has an 18 foot header, a little large for what you want, but I only gave $1000 for it. Cost almost that to haul it home.

I would forget about the 60s vintage machines. Look for a good shed kept John Deere 4400. These are good machines, and there are plenty of them still running so parts availability is not a problem. You should be able to get a diesel in decent shape for anywhere from $2500-$5000. I would forget about the gassers. they are not economical, and they are a fire waiting to happen.

You should look for a good, shedded machine to use. Combines don't weather well. I suggest finding a machine like one of the ones you've found sitting in the trees, then gather up all those old weathered ones of the same model for parts. The M-H will probably be the one with the least new parts available. JD55 and older Gleaners have some new parts still available.

I don't really know what I have or if it is worth messing with. Can someone help!

Inherited from my father his old self propelled Massey Harris ear corn picker. circa 1950 era. What model would this be?

Would it be worth fixing up?

Condition fair/good. It runs and still picks corn.

Appreciate any input out there.

Marion

a MF300 is a good combine for small acreage, can be got with a 13' head, cab gas or deisel and all the parts for it are readily available thru the aftermarket. There were a ton of these built and there's still lots around combining small acreages.

Not to start a color war, but we used to have 2 E Gleaners and then got a 300 Massey. The Gleaners were the most reliable by far, and much simpler to work on for the small farmer with limited funds. I'd highly recommend an E or F Gleaner if you can find one. The 300 is a pretty good machine too if you can find one that's been well cared for, though I'm still partial to Gleaner. Our problem may well have been poor care by the previous owner. If you want air conditioning, you'll be out of luck w/the Gleaner E (as far as I know). Not sure about the F. Above all, like the others said, find one that's been shedded. Combines really don't weather well. Good Luck.
