Thought I might as well get this posted to see what I pick with. It is a 1974 704 Uni with the 401 cu GMC V6 truck engine, variable speed trans. Mounted on it is a 737 husking bed. The 3 rw corn head is the only trouble spot, it has just to many chains underneath. Most of the time it works great and is a picking devil. Some times it doesn't husk as clean as it should due to the fact that the corn head is the stripper plate type the same as a combine and just to much trash comes in for the husking bed to clean out. Maybe a snapping roll head would cure the problem, but then you might sacrifice some shelled corn staying in the field. The cattle can eat a little ground up corn husk too.

You gotta love the old Uni's..... ..That 401 probably likes its fuel, but probably doesn't lack any hp though ;-P

How much acreage do you run that machine over? We always used the neighbors Uni's until we bought a cheap 715..... ....The 715 has less down time, but you can't pick ear corn, blow snow, or chop with it either..... ..

You are right, it loves it's gas, but lots of power. I bought it new, and first we had a 727 husking bed and a 710 combine unit, so we used it on all our 250 acres. Then we had a chance to buy a 55 JD combine and it had a little more capacity than the 710 combine and besides it saved us from crawling around underneath to change units. Now we just fill three round cribs with the picker and put it away, it more or less is out to pasture.

That is why my neighbors always had two, didn't have to swap units as much. That is in really nice shape! Would love to have a rig like that some day, but for now we still have our trusty NI mtd. corn picker.

Doesn't matter, your machine is light years better to run then a mtd. picker ;-D

Hey guys...

I just 'inherited' a Uni 705 power unit with a 737 combine unit on it. The motor is a diesel, V6 and it's a four cycle. A friend of mine alluded to the thought that it might be a GM motor...any idea what make it might be? It needs a bit of work and that info might be rather useful.

I know the GMC 305 V-6 was modified into a diesel engine, but I always thought they were a rare beast..... ..... .Will search down a site for you tonight about this engine and post it here.
