Possible Case 660 Combine Project... Advice Needed

(I also posted this in the Case forums)

I recently located a Case 660 Combine (4 cyl. gas engine) not far from our 15 acre farm that I can collect for free. It has a 5" dia. tree growing up through the corn head, so it's been sitting there a while. The bean head is laying on the ground nearby amidst piles of other junk.

It appears to be pretty complete, and has not yet sunk into the ground far enough for the lower sheet metal to touch (and rot). The auger pipe is rusted out on the bottom, though.

I'd be interested in opinions on whether this is a worthwhile project to undertake. Are parts still available for the 660? Ultimately, I'd like a small combine that I can use on several acres of corn/wheat/oats - is the 660 suited to that kind of usage? (I'm still learning farming, having moved to the midwest from the Atlanta, GA suburbs a couple of years ago).

Would also appreciate any suggestions on restarting the engine after it has sat so long (should I determine it's worth a go).

Thanks for any suggestions/input...

Thanks for the replys, guys. Sounds like I need to track down something running. If I can find a running 660, I'll have one for parts.

Off to the classifieds!

Ed try and buy one running good. I own two 660,s one of them for parts. My wife calls it the moeny pit. You can put alot of $$ into them fast. I do own a 1160 case combine with the four row head and perfer it over the 660 any day of the week. but in all fairness The 660 is a good machine if you get one that hasnt done a million acres already. Take five gallons of gas and a battery and go see what you have. take it home if nothing else to help someone else for parts good luck Bill

You would be MUCH better off finding a good useable machine, than trying to get the case running. You can find ok small machines of almost any make for anywhere from a couple of hundred to a grand or so. You could fool around an have a couple of thousand dollars in a machine that you only use on 20 acres.

remember, they aren't giving you the machine out of the goodness of their hart, they are getting someoneto haulo it off for free.

find a good little Gleaner A, E, or K; JD 40, 45, or 55, or All Crop pull type and you will be a much happier man.
