Can anyone tell me something about a John Deere 40 combine. Was it one of the first self propelled combines made by John Deere, and when was it made? I think that it has the same motor as a 1010 tractor. We have one on our farm, and still use it today. Just curious abouts its history. Thanks in advance.

My book says they were made from 1960 to 1965.Beginning Serial #'s are 1960=501 1961=2551 1962=4201 1963=5601 1964=7001 1965=9001
List price was $5465,weight was 5300#.We had a neighbor that got one new in 1961.Never was many around here and havent seen one in years.I have original sales lit on the 40 JD and for most every SP combine ever built. Both the 45 & 55 JD combines came out ahead of the 40.I believe the 55 came out in 1947.My book doesnt go back past 1954 on the 55 but am sure it came out in late 40's.Someone correct me if I'm wrong.

My book says the 55 was produced 1954-69. Same for the 45. I started out with a 45 Hi-Low, don't know what year it was. Had rice tires, could drive anywhere the drivebelt would pull me.

Paul,It sounds like you have the same book I have.I did a little digging and I have original sales lit on the JD 55 SP combine dated 12-48 so it came out in late 40's sometime.

a few were released for the 1946 season, with full production of the 55 starting in 1947.
