I'm going to look at a No. 76 combine next week. Any pointers?

I have a No. 76 combine that one of you guys need to come and get so I won't have to cut it up. It is complete, will need canvas and doors on the bottom of elevators, even has the operators manual. This combine will be FREE. E-mail for details. Tom

We have one we got for free from a local auctioneer who didn't get a nickel for it. Called and asked, said if we picked it up and didn't pay for it neither of us had to do anything with taxes and everybody would be happy. Little grease and we had it threshing at our show (throwing bundles on the canvas). Needs just a hair of tender loving care, and it is old so there is physical labor involved in working on it, but all we noticed problem wise was we had a belt break (age, most likely) and a flappy canvas which we have trimmed. Canvas is the only problem with them, but if I found another 76 I would buy/take it in a heartbeat. Good luck!!!

I went and looked. Little tougher than I cared for for $850. Sheet metal a little beat, but a lot of wear on moving parts. Canvas was fair. Saw 2 Allis 72's bring 225-300/ea on a local sale, but I want a red one, prefferably with an auger. Hate to give so much for a P.T. when I can get a 715 Hydro gas or earlier diesel w/QT heads for a little more.
Thanks, AG

Excuse me, but no way in the devil's house would I pay 8 freekin 50 for a 76. They are a fun toy, and I'm keeping my eyes out for a 76, 80, or 82, and most of the ones I've looked at have been 200 or 250 bucks. I am sure glad you decided to save your dough. I know in this area very few people grow wheat or oats, its all alfalfa and corn for the dairy farms. Back in the day, with horses and more use for raising small grains on small farms, there was more production. Now, one of these combines shows up every now and then, and then like our 76, we got it for free because no one wants them any more. Usually two or three show up at every biyearly auction here, and I plan to buy one this spring since I can get one for 5 bucks (maybe I'll use it here on my family farm's soybeans). Good luck on finding another!!!

There was an 82 on a consignment auction I went to in Milford, ILL I wanted to buy. Had to leave early though. I really want to hold out for an 80 or 82. $850 is too high for a 76 in my book unless it was absolutely perfect. I work for my dad on a small farm (500 ac.), use some of my smaller stuff for kicks. I do some 2-row cultivating with the H in the weedy spots, molboard plow & cult. the garden with a SA, etc. Wanted the P.T. for a few smaller wheat fields we have that aren't worth the effort of the 1460 and 17.5 ft., but he has 2 715's sitting as backups in the shed, only used one for a couple of days in corn last year. The 810 head is shot though. He thinks I'm nuts for wanting a P.T combine and picker, but anything else I bring home's okay (including about 15 sets of mounted cultivators at one time). I still think those old straw walkers do a nicer job for baling the straw, but there's no arguing with the boss and our new (to us!) machine.

Are those pull types ever great for baling straw!!! If we did any straw, I think I would do it all myself with my Super M, 76, and an old IH baler. That 76 lays the staw out nice and neat on the ground. Are your 715's diesel or gas? I know of a friend who has an IH repair shop (expert on IH's, anyway) and he has a great looking 715 he told my dad about that is in great mechanical shape (it is too!!!) but it doesn't have an engine. This may sound crazy, but if his price is right, I have a four cylinder (probably 50 horse) gas engine out of a skid steer I would put it in and I would use it for shelling corn by having a small elevator up to the feeder of the combine. Wouldn't take too much horsepower if i was shoveling it in, and it would make do going across the road. I don't know if the machine is hydro or not. Good luck on your pull types!!!

Both are gas, quick-tach heads, hydro, one has a chopper and adjustable reel speed, the other has a straw spreader. AG

I would look over the tin to check for rust spots. See how well the canvas is. Check bearings and shafts. They are a very simple machine. We still use ours. I did 2 acres of wheat with it last year, then I got the 403 running. I liked the combine, but it is too small for my use. I think I will be selling mine this summer. Hate to see it go, but they take uup too much shed space.
