I've recently gotten the chance to purchase a John Deere 55 combine. The machine has a cab, though all the glass in it is broke. I know it's been sitting non-running for...shoot, 20 years or more. The owner just recently pushed it out of his way with a log skidder.

It's missing the seat, all the glass in the cab except the back window, and right hand side window. The header is a bit bent, becuase it had a tree growing through it and was recently moved with a log skidder.

The good- I dont know if this was optional, but it has power steering. The cab has an air conditioner/ fan in the right hand forward corner. There are 3 lights on the front. The main drive tires appear to be good, though flat. Inside the cab isnt rusted very badly at all, and the grain tank that I could see right out the back window looked good. I didnt climb the ladder to the fuel tank to check on that area of it. The steering wheel is in good shape, and the power steering hydraulic ram looks good, though I think it may leak, due to it being covered in black oil.

If I can get it out, the gentleman will negotiate from 150. I believe I can get it out. I have a diesel 3/4 ton pickup, a 4x4 diesel half ton, and a small dump truck and heavy pintle hitch trailer. I believe I can have the gentleman with the log skidder load it for me.

My questions- What would be an approximate value for this beast? What would it be worth, roughly, scrapped out? If fully restored, I figrued it would bring 700 at most. Opinions? Also, it is serial number 55-73709. What year is it?

I bought a 55 with the engine stuck. Spent $2200 to rebuild the darn thing. Yea I'm nuts but did it for fun. Mine was the same shape had a tree growing up through the reel and had to pull it out of the trees with my 3/4 ton.

I have a very good 55 I would sell you. It's in running condition, actually I don't think this combine has all that many hours on it. Runs smooth and I have put some new parts on it. If you are wanting a combine to redo this one would be a great one to start with. Shed kept. E-mail watfarms@starband.net

Sounds like quite a deal. I recently have gotten myself into the same kind of predicament. I have a 42 pull type that has been sitting for 16 years that I am going to fix up. Very rarely is anything ever too far gone to get going again. There are lots of 55s around that you could get parts from depending on where you are located. As far as value, 700 sounds about right. You could probably get more if it was fully restored depending on where you are. In my opinion you should not pay any more than $100 for it. This guy should actually be giving you the combine. just remember that no one will ever use this machine again if you don't buy it, so don't pay too much. Please e-mail. We can discuss more that way. Methinks the fellow should have an auction, so you can bid against the junk man. Is the engine stuck too? Do you want to make this useable, or glean some good parts and make something else out of it, like a SP snowblower? You're almost doing him a favor by taking it off his hands, so maybe 50-100 FOB is enough. Sounds like $700 running value is way under what you'll have in this one, so unless you work for Enron.....

Well, I did some checking...I havent tried to see if it's stuck yet, due to the position the loggers pushed it into.

What I've about decided to do is get the serial number for a bill of sale and offer the gentleman 50 dollars cash, and have a truck and trailer waiting. I'd probably bargain up, but I could go to 150 because I got to thinking and designing.

I intend to appempt to make it run. However, I dont want to go too in debt on it because my tracor needs an engine rebuild. However, if I cant get it running, I can take the welder and torch, and I saw how I can mount the cab on my tractor. True, it wouldnt have glass in it, but for the time being it'd just be neat to have a cab. The tirse too, I've seen how to rework (well, the rims) and put the wider combine rubbers on my tractor. I can then get original style rears for my tractor, put them on original rims, and use them for show purposes only, and work it on combine tires.

If I do get in over my head on it, I can always part it out, but not to junkers. I dont mind a beyond repair machine being parted out to save/ redo useable machines, but I wont see them just scrapped, if I can help it.
