My dad and I are looking at buying a Massy HArris 45 combine this weekend at a local auction. It had been owned by an old farmer whom had never let it see a drop of water. We would like to use it on our small farm for harvesting oats and maybe some wheat. Neither of us are familar with this combine. I was wondering if anyone could give me some insight as to some of the good and bad of this machine. Thanks.

I am going to an auction in NW Pa (Route 89) on Saturday that has the same machine...by chance we talking about the same auction? I thought that was a pretty neat little combine myself. Wife would kill me if I pulled it into the driveway, though!

Yup that was the auction, went for 750, alittle more than we wanted to spend on a combine that old. It was in really good shape though.

560man,
I ended up not being able to attend the auction due to family business. I am surprised it went for that much, but it was a nice machine. Any good deals that day?
Justin

A Massey-Harris #45??? Don't know the number,
A 35, yes, built about '59-'66, clean grain, but on hills narrow concaves dumped the grain out the
back. Earlier M-H 50, a classic, clean grain, wide shaker, all the grain went back to the barn.
Good luck.

I'm currently restoring a 35. Machine was well used, but I'm finding very little wrong with it. Neat little combines! I also have a 2 row corn head. I've heard though that they could barely run one row of corn!

So, it is a 35, we get more details. If a pull-
type, a 50 HP tractor runs it well. They came with M-H decals through the '62 year. Early ones
had 7' or 8' header, late, mostly 8'. With the
optional Scour-Clean, better performance. The
self-propelled version came with a 140 C.I. Continental, the combine was underpowered by a
M-F blunder. If you had the old M-H "Clipper"
forage harvester, with 6 cylinder Continental,
one could power upgrade the S.P. 35 nicely. In
2002, the pull-type would be a wiser buy. Good
luck.
