Hi all. I realize the subject isnt too speceific, but I hope to clear that up briefely.

I have found an old self propelled combine sitting abandoned in a field behind my uncle's house. I would assume it is a John Deere, because it's green. I should know more, but the last time I looked at it, I wasnt too interested in machinery. The combine is in poor shape, admittedly. All the glass is broken in the cab, and the tires look bad but they're half full of air. The machine hasnt been touched in years, except for the various teenager going back to it to see if there was anything left to scavenge or break. I'm sure that it's quite old, due to the fact that a small tree is growing through the wood in the header. My question is, about what would it cost to replace the glass in the cab, steps to the cab, and 4 tires? If that would be quite high, what would probably be the most salvagable parts of the machine?

Thanks.

You will need to see if any sheet metal in important places still is OK. You can fix a bearing but if the sheet metal that holds the the bearing is gone there is nothing to hold on to.

The funny thing is something that was a big deal years ago like a blow engine, could be easy to fix today because of large numbers of doner machine and spare parts Assuming it a hobby project and not farming to make a living.

Good luck but old combines do not stand the weather well.

Make a list of what you need and go look for parts and then decide if you want to invest the kids college fund in the combine?
