Early Thursday morning I and a friend took off for NW Kansas on a combine trip. The plan was to haul home a 123 McCormick SP combine from WC Kansas.

We stopped in NC Kansas to look at a dandy 1954 JD 55 combine which I ended up buying. Then it was on out to Colby,KS to look at a 1952 JD 55 and a 1955 JD 55 combines for $250 each.It starting raining just as we got there.

Then we drove all the way back to WaKeeney,KS in a pouring rain to spend the night. We about drowned fueling the truck up there. We called the owner of the 123 at Ransom,KS and he said it would be too muddy to load the 123 Friday afternoon. Its on a mud road in the middle of nowhere in rattlesnake country.

So early Friday morning we dollied off the trailer and headed over 100 miles SW to pick up a bunch of NOS AC 100 SP combine parts that I won on ebay. What a treat it was to see all the stuff this guy has.On the way down we went thru areas that had 4" of rain with baseball size hail on Thurs eve. Some places had 10" of rain in 7 days and the water was rolling out of the normally dry fields

At noon we were back in Ransom,KS and took a 4WD pickup to see the 123 that I had bought sight unseen. We could have loaded it later that evening but had already made plans to load the nice 1954 JD 55 in NC KS.So we made a beeline to Beloit,KS and started loading the 55 1 hour before dark.On the way up we went by a huge windmill farm on I-70.At least 100 plus are already up with lots more being built. They run for miles.

Early Sat morning we were out to the farm by 7:30 and had the 55 loaded by 11 am.It almost rained several times.

The top picture is where the 55 had set unused since 1990.It had last been started in 1998 but the owners had it running when we looked at it at 1 pm on Thursday. In 1970 it had replaced a 1928 Baldwin pull type combine. In 1990 a slick 95 JD replaced the 55 and later a slick 6620 replaced the 95.Both the 95 and the 1800 hour 6620 were in the shed.

The middle picture is one of the bachelor brother owners Alfred E.

The bottom picture was taken just before we left for home. The guy on the right is Eugene E,next is Alfred E,next is their neice, and last is her Mom and the brothers sister. They were absolutely the nicest people you could ever meet and offered to let us spend the night there.

The 55 JD is basically field ready. It has been modified some and has a Farrar sickle drive, later style 55 operators ladder, extra ladder on the back, has larger access holes, modified air intake etc.

I got extra parts including a brand new feeder chain, new platform bottom sheet metal, used belts, etc.

We drove 1300 miles and burnt alot of high priced diesel ranging from $4.06 here at home to $4.42 at Iola,KS.We had lots of fun and saw lots of stuff. We got safely home a little after 7 pm Sat eve. There were storms to the east and south on the way home.We were saddened to find that they had killer tornadoes in them with 14 dead in SWMO and 6 dead at Picher,OK.

that's a great idea about writing a book. i tried to get an older man from lena il to do the same. he started collecting tractors before most guys even thought about it. most were thinking who wants to save that old junk? he told me about buying an old john deere near albany il he had stopped to get gas and the guy (this gives you an idea of how long ago this happened) pumping gas said i know where there is an old john deere that the owner would like to sell. so they went to look at it and ended up buying that one too.

Blaine, just another great find, and really as the others have said. But you should be ready to write your own book! Each one of these adventures I read every word you write,as I'm sure all others do.Put me down for a "signed copy" if you do!
Thanks for another great adventure!Looks like another great machine "saved" from scrap.

Thanks for the pics and the story, Blaine. I'm from Lincoln Co.; just one county south of Beloit. Spent many hours on 55's and 95's. Looks like a great machine! Ben

I agree with Moline Guy. You have a good life! Curiosity has me asking how do you find out about all these GEMS? Internet? Farm Papers or magazines? Word-of-mouth from friends? Or? Sure would be nice to see your "herd". Any show or open house planned somewhere in the future?

This is for both Ron and Moline-guy.I guess I do have a good life.I'm lucky to have a wife that puts up with my old combines.

I just wish that I had started collecting combines sooner before scrap prices and fuel prices got so high.

I find all my old combines by want ads and word of mouth. One always leads to another.Central and Western Kansas is full of them.It sure is fun meeting all the nice people while traveling around.People are sure friendly out west.

I have lots of old combines to go look at if I had the time and unlimited funds..Quite a few are always shedded such as a 21-A MH,123 McCormick,203 IH,72 Massey,40 JD,55 JD,91 IH,and lots more.

Late next Summer I should have most of my combines home and arranged for showing.I have lots to do before then.

Alfred and Eugene didnt know that anyone collected old combines and were worried that their old 55 JD would be junked.18 miles away they have a SP-12 Case and 105 JD's which we didnt have time to go look at.

You live a good life 1206, traveling the countryside meeting good people and finding neat machinery. Kind of reminds me of my cousin when we were in high school on sunday afternoons, he would find some old car or motorcyle from someone for next to nothing, and we would go "rescue" it as he would call it. Always had fun loading and hauling whatever he found and by 1 o clock in the morning he usually had whatever we hauled home that afternoon up and running, i swear that guy can fix anything. He is a cat mechanic now and still hauls stuff home every chance he gets, i think it drives his wife crazy, just some things a guy has to do, thanks for the pictures and adventures.

Way cool. Thanks for the story and the pics Blaine. Glad to see you're getting some green paint over there.

It's really neat to document the history on some of these pieces, wish I would have done that more.

Looks like these guys were pretty particular and kept things in top shape. It's neat that some of these machines were kept up for the years since they were in steady use.

I noticed an aftermarket drive on the cutterbar, that was on the 1951 55 I got from Kansas; and also noticed it on another 95 I saw at a dealer out there. Must have been a popular thing in that country, I haven't seen any with that on in the Dakota's.

Hope you've had a good day. I know it's hard to go through a holiday such as today when you've recently lost a loved one, especially one who seems to have been such a part of your family as your mother was.

Take care, Brad

Brad, Thanks for thinking about me.Mothers Day this year was much easier than a year ago.My 74 yr old MIL moved up here last July which helps. We get along great and we take her everywhere.

Alfred and Eugene take great care of their equipment. You should see their 95 JD,6620 JD,4020 JD,8100 JD,and their 74 Ford and 62 Chev grain trucks.

They have a nice collection of old tractors.Their oldest was a 1927 JD D on steel which got displayed in their bank. They have one of the nicest M Farmalls I have ever seen.

If I remember right the Farrar sickle drives were built in Norwich,KS.You saw alot of them on older JD combines.

The brothers had put another gas tank on the old 55 so it could run all day.It has practically new cylinder bars and several new belts and other parts. It wouldnt take much to put it in the field. The old flathead Hercules sure sounds nice.
