Picked up this Gleaner Corn Soy Special model out of northern Montana. It was always shedded after harvest and it looks like the guy kept care of it. Got it home started it right up and ran everything and it runs nice and smooth. Have a few oil leaks to fix but after I modify the C corn head I have or find a head for an F it looks to be field ready. It cost me more in fuel than I bought it for. Highest fuel was $4.26 a gal. It"s getting expensive to retrieve these treasures. Anyone know that when a Corn Soy special is used to combine small grains did sieves or other stuff have to be changed out or is it all adjustments. Got an operators manual coming but wonder if it will cover this "special" model since Allis took the time to build and label it Corn Soybean Special. I will have to match up the front tires. Any votes on bomber tire or tractor tread?

Where abouts did you pick that up in Montana? You want another one? I just picked up an L2 at an auction and I really don't want it or have a need for it.

Nice looking F Dan.Is this the one that was on ebay?High as diesel is,it may pay just to leave it a gas burner for now.

What did you pull it home with and what kind of mileage did you get?

Dan, that sure is a nice machine and like Allen said you may want to find a 301 diesel to put on it if you bought the machine right because that girl will suck down the gas but the FKS will be an excellent machine for all crops as JMS said and FYI the C head really only works on a C unfortunately it takes a lot of mods to make it work finding an F head shouldn't be hard to find but get out your checkbook. The good thing is the FKS already has the HHC built in for the floating cutter bar.Have fun! CT

HHC is header height control used normally in cutting soybeans with a floating cutter bar where you can cut low to the ground without constantly moving the hydraulic lift lever to adjust the cut height the FKS has a detent position you can put it in and let it float till you get to the end of the field and then lift it start back the other way and put it back in float again. There are a few other things you have to do to get it there thus the operators manual.CT

I knew that was a good, clean machine! Probably never has had anything but wheat ran thru 'er it's whole life.

Are you gonna set a diesel on 'er?

Allan

Quite a prize! Tires depend on conditions Wet-bar type, Dry- the bombers are not "original" but look cool.

For small grains you would want the chaffer (top screen) to be the short tooth, round end. For corn and beans, you"d want the chaffer to be the long tooth, square end style. Op manual has details on these and others that are available, along with starting recs for cyl speed, concave clearance, chaffer and sieve openings. Also has details on what makes it a Corn-Soy Special. For small grain you also need the belt and small diameter pulley to run the cylinder. Corn/soy, you want the larger diameter pulley and longer belt. Again, details and pulley sizes are in the op manual. For traction, you should have the tractor tread tires on the front. They certainly have to match- right now, the left side will slip out in mud. BTW, if you ever have to replace the clutch in the transmission, you need to unbolt the left side from the axle, loosen the bolts on the right side, and jack up the machine on the left side about two inches, to get the clutch away from the frame. No other way will it come out.

I wasn"t clear on the set-up question for small grains. I don"t want to combine small grains...I got this machine to combine corn. Since the previous owner did use it for small grains I"m wondering how many parts I"m going to have to track down to configure it back into a corn combine. I hope it"s mostly adjustments from wheat to corn. I"m not sure about the diesel swap. We"ll see how much gas it uses. I"m not sure about the old Allis diesels. I got a good 6 cylinder JD engine that is in that cotton picker I got at the auction so if I feel the need I"ll use that engine. I will swap out to bar treads for now. I agree the bomber tires do look neat.

RE: previous post... for corn you need the larger cylinder pulley- 15-16 inch, and belt, along with the chaffer with the long square end tooth. Regarding switching engines....why? remember that engine speed is an issue, and not common among all machines. Screws up all combine shaft speeds. KISS formula.

That's good to know I won't have to hunt own a ton of parts to get it corn ready. It will be harvesting with the gas engine this year but who knows down the road.
