Off the wall question for you combine guys, but I've been thinking of a way to rig up a dial tach for the pulling tractor, but most tachs available go so high that the ole two-lunger would barely move the needle. I got to thinking, and figured that I could probably use a feederhouse tach or fan tach from a combine along with the corresponding pickup and such. Does anyone know what sort of RPM ranges some of these tachs go from, and/or which model would be a good one to start with, I'd like to find something with around a 0-2000 rpm range. I'd go to the local Deere dealer and ask them, but since it seems they don't know up from down on most days, figured it'd be a lot quicker here.

The engine tach in a 55 JD is cable operated. The engine runs around 2000 RPM, and is graduated in 500 RPM increments, if I'm not mistaken, been last fall since I looked. Not sure of range on a cylinder tach off a Corn Special, mine is not.

Why not get a tach and mounting bracket for a 60, that is driven off the governor. I take it you might be putting it on a A? Be easier that trying to cobble on a combine tach...what happened to the digital tachs?

Yeah, I had considered going that route, but decided against it for a couple of reasons. First, my A governor is already clearanced for the crank, and milled down for a spacer plate, second, I've never been a fan of cable driven tachs, especially the ones on a 2-cyl, and lastlty, with something electric, you can run the wiring in any path you should so desire, never mind any crazy bends and such, so you can hide it pretty well, but you can't do that with a cable.
I have a digital tach on it now, works great, I just prefer dial over numbers.
