When I was 14 not only was I running the combine all day, I was driving the loaded 300 bushel grain. When I was 13 my Dad drove the combine to another farm 20 miles away and I followed in the grain truck. Didn't think much of it, just had to get the job done.

AC put a prototype Model L Gleaner with a custom operator in the summer of 1969. Some of the Gleaner engineers and execs came up to Montana, where I had a unit of the Gleaner Caravan, to check on the Model L. When they got to the farm where the combine was operating, they found that that custom operator's 8-year-old son was operating the combine.

They came back to the caravan and made a bunch of phone calls about that kid operating the combine. I told them that I started driving tractors without any power assists when I was 8; that it was no big deal for a farm kid to run that machine with power everything.
