This E Gleaner was the lone tornado survivor at this farm on Sunday May3,2003.This picture was taken 1 mile west of Liberal,MO.Tragically the widowed farm owner lost his life here. There was nothing left of the buildings.

A severe outbreak of tornadoes claimed many lives on this Sunday afternoon. The storm path went just 14 miles to the south of me and was on the ground for over 100 miles.I found tornado debris in my fields.

The story behind the picture is very unfortunate but that is a great photo.

Great picture on an unfortunate situation Blaine. In all my years on this earth including things like Viet Nam and 9/11 I still can't fathom the devastation of a tornado. A similar thing happened close to me in 1974 in Xenia Ohio where it lifted big train locomotives and carried them 100yds like toys but yet flowers still were left intact only 25 feet away. I was plowing later that spring and I was forty miles away and was finding shoes and football programs from Xenia high school that were deposited there. Pretty sobering reminders especially coming into Tornado season soon. Thanks Blaine

wow! it seems like there are more out of regular tornado season tornadoes every year. i'm no gleaner expert but isn't that an 'a' with the round gas tank and it looks a little wide in the back to be an 'e'. great picture terrible to get caught in one of these storms. odd things happen like the trucker that survived in his sleeper during that huge tornado that went through that deere dealer in kansas last march.

That, they were. Still, this Gleaner somehow managed to miss the storm by only feet!
