Looked at NH TR85, Massey 760 and JD 4420. My dad had MF 760 when I was growing up. From what I can remember it was pretty good machine but that was 15 years ago. Any advice would be nice. More of a hobby farm less then 100 acres

Might look into an axial flow as well in reply to Gettin started, 02-10-2008 16:55:54
We just sold our 1440 IH and upgraded to a 1680. It was a very good machine for the money we gave for it. Never really had to do much more to it other than regular maintenance. Maybe a 1420 would be good if you can find one. The JD 4420 would be better if you want to bale some wheat straw as the 1440 chews it up pretty good. Good luck.

For less than 100 acres I would be looking at the 4420 JD.Others I would consider are a F2-3 Gleaner,715 IH,300 Massey-etc.

Not that many years ago in one season I ran 550 acres thru a 715 IH while working a full time job with lots of OT.

The Deere is going to have the widest variety of heads and the best parts availability out of all three listed there. As much as I like my TR for under 100 acres the 85 is too big, too clumsy, too hard to get parts for and if it doesn't have the lower shaft in the feederhouse too hard to find good heads for. I don't know a thing about the 760. Out of the three for what you are doing I would lean toward the 4420. The XX20 series Deere's especially the Titan II were a lot nicer machines than the XX00 series.
While on the subject maybe someone can explain this to me because it always baffled me. Why did Deere put the pre-cleaner and air filter in the grain tank? That 4400 I sold and the 6600 we had every time you did corn they would suck that stuff in there like it was it's job. Plus you had to climb in the grain tank to change the filter element.

You want the 4420. Deere is still the leader for a reason. The masseys are hard to work on. We still run a 6600, can get any parts you need. Plus you have dealer support that is pretty good. The New holland dont compare to the 4420 either.

My dad bought a 4420 new in 1982 and used prolly combined over 10,000 acres with it in 6 years and he said it was a great combine, very dependable. Also parts are still easy to find. Also 4420s are easier to work on then the other combines listed.

Of the three, the 4420 is the smallest, still plenty big for 100 acres, and chances are, easier to get parts for.

I agree with JMS, go with the 4420. It's plenty big for 100 acres and it is easy to get parts for.
