The very first 55's had an unloading auger that was straight and did not fold, to drive into a shed or transport long distances the auger had to be pulled out. This was usually done once a year for storage. (I did run across a very early 65 pull type in ND with the straight auger, that had an ingenious setup with a cable winch to lift and store the auger.)

Folding augers came out first as an option, then standard on 55's and the later 45's. They folded up and over with the end resting on top of the grain tank.

The augers were changed to fold back in 1960 with the introduction of the Hi-Lo series. These were still roundback; but had a lower, wider grain tank for lower transport height.

The augers were again changed on the squarebacks, with the lower section that comes out of the tank being level, and angle joint coming at the swivel point. This allowed more capacity in the grain tank.

Hope this helps, I'll try to find some pictures later.

Brad

Brad, What year did the 55's get the fold up unloading auger as an option and then when were they made standard.?Knowing this will help me tell the age of some of the 55 JD's that have been offered to me.

Correction on unloading auger in reply to 1206SWMO, 02-03-2008 16:00:08
Looking more closely at the brochures. The first year the folding auger was advertised as an option was 1954.

The 1951 brochure doesn't show any folding augers, I thought it did. It looks like it could have gone either way in the early to mid 50's.

It's going to be hard to tell with the unloading auger, as that could have been changed or updated on any of the older models. Of the 55's I have only the 1948 model has the straight auger, the 1951 and newer models have the folding auger. Looking in the JD literature I have it appears the folding auger became an option in about 1950 or 1951. The one brochure I have from 1949 only shows straight augers, while the ones from 1951 and 1954 show both styles of unloading augers on different machines pictures.

The best way to tell is by serial #'s or the changes in operating platforms I showed a while back.

I've got a list of serial #'s and model year breaks I'll try to post after a while.
