I'm going to try shelling ear corn out of the crib with my 303.I've only ever used it to combine oats and as far as I know thats all it's ever done.I don't have a manual so you can imagine how lost I am.What needs to be changed to go from oats to corn? Thanks for any help. A.J.

AJ, I've done this with small combines and larger combines. It isn't too hard to do. Set the cylinder speed in the 400-450 range and open the concave so the cobs come out whole, or as close as possible. My rule of thumb on the spacing for the sieves is "top sieve- index finger", "bottom sieve, little finger". This is not absolute but will get you close. And with corn or other large seeds you need all the air you can get. If you have the sieves closed too much you will get air PRESSURE. You are after air VOLUME. If you close the sieves too much it's like putting your thumb on a garden hose. Some folks even open up the top sieve all the way if the corn is not too dirty. You may have to open the top sieve a little more than you would in a field situation because at low feed rates you will have more corn bounce out of the sieves. If you see this, open the chaffer. DON'T automatically reduce the air. This will only compound the problem. Hope this helps. Mike

Forgot to mention... in reply to Mike Aylward, 01-15-2008 06:44:15
I forgot to mention that you will want the front of the concave spaced at around an inchand a quarter or so to start with and the rear spaced at about a quarter to a half inch or so less. The rear spacing should be about the same size as your cobs so they come out as whole as possible. Mike

Cylinder needs slowed down to 400 rpms and you really need filler bars to keep from breaking up the cobs. You will have to open up the cylinder clearnace a bunch. It will take some trial and error.

The sieve and chaffer need to be opened up a bunch and you will need quite a bit of air.

You may need to try and find an owners manual on ebay.

I do this with my 95 JD. Usually I open the concave all the way and use a sprocket to get about 425 Rpms. Full air and adjust the seives to clean well.
