I wasn't aware that combines existed in 1880
!! That must have been quite a show getting all those horses hitched up and to the field, let alone operating it.

Combines existed before 1880. One ran in Michigan in the mid-to-late 1830's, invented by a guy named Hiram Moore. One of his combines cut 63 acres in 1839, before Cyrus McCormick had made a reaper that actually worked well at all. You ought to get yourself a copy of "The Grain Harvesters", by Graeme Quick and Wesley Buchele. Great reading about the history of grain harvesting. Fascinating.

Yes, the first successful combine was patented in 1836 by Hiram Moore, John Hascall and Andrew Young Moore [not related to Hiram]. The Michigan wheat was too damp to successfuly store direct-cut from the field, so the combine was shipped out to California, thus seeding the famous combine development over there.

Yes, it"s hard to believe combines have now been with us, 172 years!

Thanks for the information and I will get a copy of that book. I certainly didn't know that combines were developed that far back.
