For me it was my Dads 1965 model 203 IH in the fall of 1966.We were shelling corn for a neighbor.I was 17 then. After that I ran our combines more than Dad did.I wanted to drive the combine sooner but Dad wouldnt let me.

The first tractor that I ever drove alone in the field was a 1947 8N Ford at age 6 back in 1955.My little brother plowed all day on our 8N at age 5.He followed Dad whom was in the lead on the M Farmall.

For me it would have been a John Deere 8820 harvesting wheat at about 12 or 13 years old. My Dad and I have a custom harvesting business here in eastern WA. I"m now 23. I have spent many many hours since that first time on JD 8820"s 6600"s and 9600 combines. Harvesting wheat, corn, grass seed, soy beans, edidible beans, alfalfa seed, clover seed, buckwheat, mustard, triticale, mint tea, catnip and more. I love combines!

Picked peanuts with a Long picker year before last at 17. Never cut grain by myself, but have drove combine some. Hope to cut our oats this year.

Anybody ran a cotton picker? No for me, always hired done.

Helped a neighbor cut wheat when I was about 15. He had a JD 95 with 20 foot header, cab, AC and two Molines with 14 foot headers. I got to drive one of the Molines. Don"t remember what model they were but they did have a button to push when ever you needed to grease the combine. Thought that was neat. Going to have to do some research now to see what the model was.

Don't browse here too often, but it is a good post, so i will put in my .02. Summer 1983, i was 12, windrowed spring wheat, running dads 68 vista G1000 and his 68 96 john deere. I was and still am allergic to grain dust but still running itchy dusty combines. Dad run two 96's and later a 410 massey for the row crops until early 90's when we switched to 4400 and two 6600's that we still use. First picture of the vista and 1966 96 on grain millet and the second is the 1968 96 on wheat with a haybuster chaff saver that put the chaff on top of the straw, we would bale up and feed to the cows, take care.

My Dad had a MM G-4 pull-type combine that we pulled with a UB or if the field was level we used an single front wheel Avery A.
There were a lot of the MM G-4's in central MN during the 50's, a very reliable machine. My brother still has one in the shed that is ready to go to the field. Might be a little slow with the oats stands of today.

Started on a Massey Harris 70 SP that my Dad bought new in 1952. I rode on the tool box behind Dad for years, sucking up the dust and loving every minute of it. (These soccer Moms nowadays don't know what quality time with Dad is!) Ran it myself for the first time when I was about 18 after Dad got hurt in an accident at the quarry. Bought my first combine in the mid seventies. A John Deere 45 square back with a 210 corn head. Got a 4400 in about 86, a 6620 in 92, and now have a 9500. Sure do wish Dad hadn't sold that Massey for 50 dollars. Jim.

I was 12 in 1968 and I worked for an old farmer tying sacks on a 123 IHC SP. He let me run it some in lotus and red clover. I helped him 2 years. I now have the old 1942 123 SP.
The first tractor I drove was a Farmall H sitting on Dads lap. At 6 he let me drive it on my own while he loaded straw. I was such a small kid I couldn't reach the pedals till 10 so I couldn't plow on my own till then. Dad rolled the old H twice. I bought a 1950 H from a good friend who bought it new. I got it when he retired 3 years ago....James

That would be Dads Massey Harris 60 sp back about 1967. Not for long, just enough to fill in when necessary. The first serious combining I did for myself was the Case 460 pull type behind the 730 Case diesel. Trying to link a picture of it. Link

It was a 7720 with a 643 corn head. Must have been 1986, I would have been 15. It was a terrible muddy mess and dad thought maybe it was best he take care of the wagons in the mud and I got the job of running the combine. I spent untold hours riding in the corner of the cab on a late 715 growing up. We picked ear corn until most everyone else had quit and I got to spend alot of time riding around on a 706 pulling a JD 300 picker with my dad and granddad. Back in the late 70's The local IH dealer also sold NH equipment and they would bring out pre production NH combines and a group of engineers. They would combine right along side of us for days on end just putting hours of use on those machines to see how they performed. bill

My gosh - we must be related. Our family picked corn with a New Idea mounted on a 706 until 1975. They started shelling with an IH 715 (built two grain bins) and then combines progressed to 6600, 6620, and now 9400. I was not ever around the 6600 as I was away from the farm during the 1980s. Are you the one from New Palestine Indiana? We live in Yorktown and have some of the family ground in eastern Delaware County.

Rode along a few times when in my teens on a couple of differenet 6620 sidehills.

Then for real on a JD45 a few years ago when I was 35. Used it every year since, and have picked up a JD30 to use for the oats.

The first combine i can remember was with a neighbor a F gleaner which was pretty much the standard combine around here for a while. i think they replaced massey 82 s. The first and only one i've owned is an all crop 72. First tractor i rode on and got to steer was a 52 8N with my grandfather before he died in 65. First tractor i remember being turned loose on was a 560 I-H diesel pulling either a disc or a harrow {with duals}!!!Whose the man?? oh yeh eat your heart out neighbor kids! lol [all suburbanites} They didnt know what "cool" was! Then the BIG 4010 diesel with a 4 row wide cultivator. He did have a D21 for a while but didnt like that it had water in the hydraulic oil when he got it. My God that thing was HUGE!Looked bigger than the neighbors 4wd JDs. Drove for another neighbor that had a big 2-155 white which was the biggest so far but they didnt look as big or scary as that I-H at the county fair when i was a kid. Now when i hauled fuel to coal mines that stuff was big.Man i feel sorry for kids now. But i know those amish kids still get a kick out of the draft horses when they get to "be farmers" . Stand next to one of those horses heads and it reminds you of the first huge tractor when you were a kid.

The first combine I ever ran was a "63 55. I was probably 15 or so. But the first combine I ever had operating experience with was a 30 pull-type (which I still have and hope to restore some day soon). The 30 has a gearbox on it where you go from running the separator to running the unloading auger. The very first job I had in the field of any kind that I can remember was when Dad would come in to unload beans he would drive up to the truck or wagon and Grandpa would unlatch the unloading auger. My job was to switch the lever on the gearbox. I was 3 or 4. Dad always said to wait until the shaft quit turning and THEN run the lever. No doubt he could have run the lever with linkage from the tractor but he wanted me to be a part of things. While he was cutting beans my grandpa would take out the operator"s manual and show me the cutaway view of the combine and explain how it worked. I literally understood how a combine worked before I could read. Dad and Grandpa both did custom work in years past and Granpa was involved in a threshing crew so harvesting has been in our family for many, many years. I still love combines and every time I run one I think of Dad and Grandpa who taught me very well about them. Mike

First combine was a 1979 6600 Sidehill, which is one year older than me (sorry). I was 12, and my dad had taken a job in town along with our hired man, and grandpa and my uncle weren't about to let me haul to town with the trucks (don't blame them), so my only instructions were "don't bend a snout." My dad and uncle were furious, but grandpa reminded them that I'd been riding with him since I was 4 or 5 and probably knew more about it than them (esp. dad). I still run a combine every fall, and grandpa still has that 6600 in a barn. Maybe in 10 years it'll be ok to restore and run next to my 95. Tractor was a 1952 B loading hay bales, and I've been a two cylinder man ever since.

1978 JD 6600 with posi torq transmission, gear drive. Combining oats wheat and rye, age 14. We always had two so someone else was out there also.

The first day I drove by myself for the whole day I ran into a highline pole with the unload auger. Good thing the hopper was just emptied! Never did that again, took the next morning to fix and was good as new.

I was driving a Case LA pulling a JD No. 17 at about age 12. Uncle owned the outfit and he rode the combine with some instructions hollered to me over the noise of the combine. About age 17 I was driving Dad's outfit, a JD No. 5A being pulled by a McCormick Deering W-30 with the tractor controlled from the combine! Would that pass as a self-propelled? LOL You were BUSY with that outfit. First true self-propelled was a 1948 JD 55 at age 25 in 1962. Could have driven it at a younger age but Dad just bought it (used) that year after I had finished military service. All of these were in windrowed grain in North Dakota.
(Great idea for a post. Just like reading a history book of farming to read all these nice responses.)

1957 with a new round back 45,at age 14 I would run at lunch while Dad rested. After that I would usually unload the truck while Dad ran and run while he rested. I still have the 45.

I actually have more seat time on my 60 all crop and 91 IH. LOLOL. Dad's not doin too well health wise, so he may have to give in and let me run the r52 this year.

First combine I ever ran was Grandpa's IH 82, behind his (now my) Ford 7000, probably about 13 or 14. First SP I drove was a JD 7720, about age 18. Owner was combining for us, but had to go help his son with their IH (1460?) in someone else's field. Told me the basics, and "run her till I get back". First one I owned was a Gleaner E, when I was 22. First tractor was Grandpa's (also now my) Ford Jubilee, at age 5, raking hay. Only drove it in the field or yard -not on the road- until I was about 7 or 8.

Well Blaine does driving the tractor pulling it count? LOL. If so I was pulling a #42 JD with dad's D-15 Allis when I was 12. He bought a 300 Massey when I was 14 and I ran it more than he did.

I was thirteen with a Massey 35 pull-type behind a Massey 35 tractor. I harvested the thirty acres of mixed grain for our dairy herd and after I was sent to a neighbours to do his. He gave me a hundred dollars for the days work. It felt great. For the previous four years I drove three horses on seven foot binder. That's when I learn patience and self control.

My first was a IH203 in oats summer of 1975, i was 19 years old. My first tractor was an 8n mowing fairways at 18. and before that a MF 35 with a cab hauling manure at 15 cleaning horse stalls for $3.00 per hour and befor that my beloved WheelHorse mowing our huge 5 ac. lawn and boondocking with it. That little Wheelhorse would go anywhere you pointed it. Mike

Guess I'm one of the younger ones here. Probably 16 or 17 I ran our 8700 White way back in the mid-1ate 1980's. Then we got a 1640 Case IH. Lot nicer to run but I think the White was better built. I am sure I would get a lot of disagreement over that but just my opinion.

First combine was a John Deere 55EB round back, in soybeans, I was 11 years old. I was riding with my dad, we unloaded at the wagons we had at the time, he climbed down the ladder and said "have fun, I'm cold" and went inside. His other words of advice as he was walking away "don't hit anything with the auger and if anything goes wrong shut it off"

First combine was a New Holland 990 when I was about 16 in pretty heavy oats. Dad was busy elsewhere so I got to fill the truck, haul it, unload and go back to combining.

I learned to drive on a '39 JD A with a 2 row corn cultivator when I was 12. Dad had me running in second gear and TALK ABOUT BORING!

I drove the MF 300 a few times when I was maybe 9 but my dad was in the cab with me. First one I ever drove by myself was the M2 Gleaner. Most recently I drove my friend's 6600 JD in our corn. Most of my combine time now is with my 52R pulltypes.

Driving a combine, a Massey 300 in 1975 at the OLD age of 32, the first self propelled on this farm. Now, at at about 13 or 14 in the late 50s, I spent many hours in the seat of a Farmall SA pulling an AC 66 all crop cutting oats. Man that dust was itchy. Put in my share of time on the sacking platform tying sacks too. Dust was worse back there.

I think back in 1972 when I was 13 I combined corn with 1965 JD 105 combine and 434W cornhead, then 1974 bought JD 7700 diesel and cut beans and harvested corn that machine until I bought my own JD 7700 in 1978 at age 19 for custom harvesting in Illinois.

I think I was 14, I know I wasn't old enough to have a license, driving a 1958 JD 55 round-back, picking up windrowed oats. My old man simply said, "You know what every control does, you've played on this thing since you were a kid, so have at it." That was in the summer, and that fall, I got introduced to combining soybeans and corn, too. I've loved combines ever since, and yes, I hate combine demo derbies, and the people who organize them!

The first combine I run was a Cockshutt SP137 in about the 1964 season which would have made me nine.

1206 I am still keeping an eye out for a photo of that machine. Our father traded it for a 105 with a cab in about 1972. Still remember the first time I went "with the wind" that ombine. No chaff and straw down the neck....heaven!

I'm not sure what you mean by driving a combine but when I was 8 or 9 I remember sitting beside my Dad on Grandpa's Super 27 and steering the combine while he ran the controls. The first time I operated the combine by myself I would have been 12 and it was Dad's C Gleaner which I still have. When I was 8 Dad put me on the John Deere A to cultivate milo.

I love this post 1206 nice job, my first SP driving job was a new JD45 in 1959 for my cousin running corn on Saturdays. He had four new combines running 1200acres of corn and I think it was all down I was 12 years old he just said there it is run it my brother ran one my cousin ran one and one of his hired hands ran one and all the other hired hands ran the potato dump trailers to catch with driving JD430s and 435s it was a cold November with freezing wind I was sweating the first hour making sure I was getting used to all the levers but after that I froze to death shelling into the wind and driving back in road gear on the driveway it was heavy corn for those days my brother said it was 130 to 140 bpa in rotated potato river bottom ground all I know is with a two row wide head at a crawl less than 2mph we were unloading at about every 15 mins. Can't remember my first tractor its been too long ago probably a W-30.
