Rogers previous post about the gas 300 backfiring got me thinking. At work I sometimes wonder what the technique is for starter fluid in a diesel? Spray the starter fluid while also spraying WD40? I know its not good, but theres sometimes you've got to, like this Summer when we stalled a tracked Vermeer trencher crossing the live lane on a state highway job. It had set for awhile and was running rough at first. It had a Detroit, running a cutter wheel through a foot of concrete and 6" of asphalt. About two days later the rusted muffler fell off, it absolutely screamed, unlike anything I've ever heard.

On cold days I have ethered the 4-53 Detroit in my 1967 Oliver 1950 tractor. The air shut off works on it in case it would run away.

With no muffler you can hear the old 2 cycle Detroits for many miles. At the pulls we turn my old 1950 Oliver 3000 rpms thru a 4 ft 4" straight pipe.

As Far as I know there is NO way to Shut off the Air ,,Or a Decompressor like My 800 Case has ,, Jim

T-rev I vaguely remember a story my late brother told me years ago when he was a gasoline tanker driver delivering to filling stations using Whites with Detroits to never leave them idle next to storage tank vents because two cycle Detroits had ported intakes and would run away with no way to stop them so whatever that means take it for what it's worth. I'm guessing Ether or something similar would have the same affect. I'm guessing some Detroit mechanic can shed some light on that.
