Okay,

Wanna put those big main shaft bearings in this old F2.

Was talking to the fellow in at the shop this morning and he said that there was a way to yank bearings and shaft together as a unit?

Take the left side pulleys/bearing gudgeon off and then the whole works (bearings and shaft together) will just pull out that left side?

He says it saves a heck of a lot of disassembly work over on the right side. He says it works for sure this way on the Ls and Ms and is just about positive it will work on the F2 as well.

Anyone ever do it this way?

Allan

40 acres a day was doing good on those machines. I remember the big straw days. Those little machines just couldn't handle it like the big ones. We had a neighbor who liked to plow out alfalfa, put on the regular amount of N and plant Scout wheat. That stuff would be 5 foot tall before it went down.

Take that 760 over to Spallinger's where it belongs!

Well Allen, here's what my mechanic friend said, he said he would do one side at a time starting with the right side because the left is the locator side and has the over center clutch apparatus for the manual engagement unlike the L&M because of the electro/hydraulic engagement and the F3 is different because of the same reason. You will need a good puller and cuss alot (that was my statement because it's coming back to me now) he reminded me of a couple we've done together I just can't remember all the little details at which he's good at. Hope this helps. He's a good mechanic but short on details unless you ask specific quetions. CT

On cold days I have ethered the 4-53 Detroit in my 1967 Oliver 1950 tractor. The air shut off works on it in case it would run away.

With no muffler you can hear the old 2 cycle Detroits for many miles. At the pulls we turn my old 1950 Oliver 3000 rpms thru a 4 ft 4" straight pipe.

What main shaft? When you talk gudgeon- that must mean cylinder. But left side has sprocket/chain running the thresher beater and what....tailings return. Other main shaft is the countershaft in the middle of the machine, and it has no gudgeon on either end. Inquiring mind wants to know> Gudgeon on the cylinder has the short shaft and the bearing- both sides. When you take that apart, have the top cover off of the cylinder area, support the cylinder with a bar, and unbolt the gudgeons on each side- two shafts with bearings. Or are you talking about the pivot bearings that support the thresher housing?- that is a whole 'nother issue- but easy to do as long as you have support for the thresher housing. Work safely!!! Then, it is loader time.

I can sure remember changing the bearings years ago, but remember takin' 'em down to parade rest on both sides and leaving the shaft in place. Kinda remember that the torch was involved too. :>)

Also, remember that the shaft has to be aligned to run "true and square" with the body of the machine so that all those belts will track correctly.

Re: Picture-A6 Case Pulled By An Old JD in reply to NW MO Poppers, 01-17-2008 11:35:21
Thanks to those that identified this as a GM JD.I thought that it was maybe a G.I never was around any G JD's growing up as there were none in my area.

We did have a 1944 B and a 1947 A JD tractors between 1960 and 1967.

In the 1950's Dad pulled our A-6 Case combine with a 1947 8N Ford.
