I'm not bidding, as I've already got real nice twin to that one. It was a one owner shedded machine that came from western ND. One of those deals that makes this hobby fun.

The machine had been sitting for about 20 years, and hadn't been run during that time. The engine was loose, so I brought a newly rebuilt carb and a fully charged battery with when I went to get it. We were getting it to smoke and sputter, but it wouldn't start when the elderly guy told me to try his idea. We sprayed a small amount of WD-40 in each cylinder, put the plugs back in, and tried it again. The engine smoked like heck for a while, but it caught and ran. His idea was the Wd-40 would seal the piston rings a little more and give it some more compression, along with a little firing boost. I was surprised that it worked, but it did. It smoothed out really nice and I drove it on the trailer!

After we had it loaded we went in for dinner and talked about wheat prices, wish I would have told him to hold everything until now!

Later, Brad

I'm not going to bid on it, so have at it. I don't have enough barn space and too many other projects right now.

And now I must force myself to stop looking at it or I'll be tempted again.

This one appears to have the hydraulic variable speed, not available on the earlier models.

Yes, looks like a nice machine. It's only 200 miles from me and the auction ends on my birthday. Is that a sign? I'd still have to convince my wife. If I had only sold one of my 40s she probably would mind.

My one question is, can you fit the machine and header on a 25' gooseneck trailer? A separate trip for each means $300 in fuel to bring it all home.

Yes,you can haul that combine on a 25' gooseneck.I do it all the time.

I pull the combine on backwards, take the header loose, and turn it on the trailer.Usually with someone helping me it doesnt take over 2 hours to do this.

You want to be sure that you are under 13'6" too.Sometimes a few tall things have to come off.

I have also left the headers on and took the back roads but I live in some pretty open country.

You know what guys? It looks like it has a scarifier on the clean grain to bin elevator which was characterisitic of the older machines for a grass seed machine but man that is one nicely kept machine! You know after going to a few antique furniture flea markets I'm learning a few key issues I never relly paid attention to and that is small things of the period and that is things like flat (I call latch hook drive chains) versus roller chains which is very much a part of the early 20th century until the early 50's and the lack of guarding which really didn't appear until the late 60's with the advent of OHSA. Antique machinery relly reflects the period. Enough culture for now!

That's a scourkleen attachment. They were pretty common on machines from the 50's. They would screen out the weed seeds, which would be collected in a bag on the side. If you look closely under the spout coming down there is a place to put a bag and hold it into place.

I don't know what people did with the weed seeds. I suppose you could feed them to the chickens, and then spread them out on the field again next year! I know pheasants really like them.

They make 'em like they used to. (Good or bad?).

Scourkleen was the word I was looking for but couldn't remember I worked in Scott's Farm seed mill right after high school and used a scarifier for Red Clover for one of my earlier duties and man! what a dirty job? One of the longest two weeks of my life during that season bumping timothy was the longest that seemed like that went on forever. Wow! Those were the days!

Definitely not an early 55 since it has folding unloading auger and fuel tank on the right rear.

I'm no expert by any means but this 55 has to be one of the early ones due to the folding unloading auger as the later models did fold towards the back and not straight up and also look at the steering wheel. I would guess it was probably in the first several years of production.

What year did the folding unloading auger become available on the 55's?

Hi guys, This 55 is a late 1955, 1956,or 1957 model. It has the JD four speed transmission, which was introduced in 1955. The 1958 model year was the first year the JD 217 engine was used. This has the Hercules flathead 6. Also in 1958 the angled steering column was used on the 55 combines which is a quick way to identify them.

I believe the folding unloading auger was available in 1950 or 1951, it was first available as an option; and then made standard. I have a 1951 #55 that has the folding auger, and a 1948 that has the straight auger. Sometimes these may have been added later as changeover.

That looks like a good old 55, looks like it was shedded most of the time; and is pretty straight. Would be quite a haul to go to Pennsylvania from anywhere in the midwest.

Have a good day, Brad

Brad,

Gary mentions the late 55s had unloading auger folding back instead of up. I don't remember that and not sure it's correct. Do you know?

Ron

Hey Ron, I still have your email about the 55 in ND, I haven't been out that way since. Probably this spring or summer I'll get through there and do some scouting around.

I'm still trying to find another 55 with the hand controlled variable speed. It appears those are pretty hard to come by.

It looks like I'll be pretty busy for a few months, as we are adopting twins in the next month or two. (Depends on when they are born, hopefully not too soon; right now the birth mother is 7 months along.)

Have a merry Christmas. Brad

Brad,

I pray for all the best for your adoption process.

The 55 I told you of does have the hand controlled variable ground-speed control. But I have no idea if it still exists since it went at Dad's farm retirement auction in 69. My limited checking said it is a 1948 model. I have some old slide photos of it somewhere that I should dig out and print. Also have some limited movies of it with Dad driving that a friend converted to videotape for me. The movies were not all that great, but better than nothing.

When you get nearer to your possible trip to scout, send me an email and we can refresh any details you may need.

Merry Christmas to you too. Ron

Hi there, They went to the auger folding to the back with the Hi Lo series starting in 1960. The grain tank was made lower and wider, also the clean grain elevator didn"t stick above the tank any more.

Some one should write a book on the history of combines. I think it would just as interesting or more than tractor history. Later, Brad

I was serving in the US Navy in 1960 and was far away from The Great Plains and not paying any attention to combines (shame on me) so totally missed some of that history. After the Navy I didn"t go back to catch up on some of that history either (again shame on me) as SOOO many other things entered life to distract me!!!

Brad, you would be well qualified to write the John Deere section. There needs to be more books on old combines.
