The engine is very difficult to get at, tucked in under the drum etc. Getting a battery in is also difficult as it has to be put in under the platform then lifted over the axle. The other problem is the steering as it is an endless cable from a drum on the steering wheel to a drum driving the worm shaft on the dual wheel unit at the back. I am told there is no feel to the steering, the analogy I was given was that it was as bad as the lever steering in the IH 91. On the clipper you turned the steering wheel but there was no indication as to where the wheels were until you saw the direction changing.

What powered the Clippers?

My Dad had one. If I remember correctly, it was a 4 cyl. Continental engine. (Clear under the right side of the combine, made it very hard to work on.

John, you are correct. They have a 162 cubic inch flathead 4 cyl Continental engine.I expect that your Dads old Clipper SP is long gone?

One of my Clipper SP's was last used in 1964 and has just a few hours on an OH.It still has anti-freeze in the radiator.I just beat the junkman to it near Cuba,KS.

1206SWMO and others; Yes, that combine is long gone. He always had trouble with it. He traded it for a pull type clipper which was more trouble free. One chronic problem with the SP Clipper was the sickle driver. At one time it was determined that the header was bent, so Dad and a neighbor took it off, straightened it, and welded in some bracing. The next day Dad was trying to re-install the header himself. He didn't block it up securely, and when he was laying under it, trying to hook up the lift, it slipped and pinned him to the axle. He couldn't yell because his chest was squeezed. Fortunately, the dog started raising a ruckus and my Mom heard and investigated. She grabbed 2 sickle guards and picked it up enough that Dad got free. Outside of a couple of broken ribs, he was OK. The next day they were trying to finish hooking it up, and my Mom wasn't strong enough to even move, let alone lift it. (God's protection at work.)

A higher authority was definitely watching over your Dad that day.
