Pastor Rick whom has a great photo album on Flickr gave me permission to post these pictures so that we can identify this dandy old combine.

He took these pictures in Emmons County,North Dakota which is full of old combines.Combines like this were never used around here and were before my time so I'm not much good on them.

This combine appears to be in good shape and needs to be saved.

That is either a model A or model R Baldwin Gleaner built in the late 20's or early thirties, I have a 1929 model R and it looks alot like that one, however the model A had a different tail section and I cant see it in the picture, Mine still has pencil writing on the grain tank telling how many bushels were harvested with it in Grover Colorado in 1930 or 31. It has the model A ford engine on it, My greatgrandfather had two of them near New Raymer colorado but they were scrapped by mistake. I got mine from a family freind in Hereford Colorado, then found one that had been dismantled for parts and plan on restoring it one day, neat old machines, I believe they were the first to have an auger in the header instead of drapers, but not sure.

71ford100 I wouldn't worry about it this guys been on Stuck and troubled doing the same thing we finally got wise to him over there too we probably should report him but let us have fun. He or she should know most of us on here know square pegs don't fit in round holes in other words most of us on here know your comment profile and when we see a sour note we just blow it off. The thing I see is this person probably can't tie their shoes but knows how to hack someones password and probably is either a pre or early teen or of that mentallity unfortunately I have a 13 year old grandson that probably fits that profile. I for one have been reading your posts and enjoy your subjects.This is kind of like the CB craze of the 70's nothing new.

1206, It"s definitely not a John Deere 5A. I grew up in North Dakota small grain country and we owned a 5A. The 5A had a right hand platform. This photo shows a left hand platform. Based on some photos in a book I have (The Grain Harvestors by Quick and Buchele) I believe it"s a Gleaner Baldwin model R with 12 ft platform. Also found photos of Gleaner Baldwin combines in a book (by Norm Swinford called Allis-Chalmers Farm Equipment 1914-1985) that pretty much comfirms the one in this photo to be a Gleaner Baldwin. The Swinford book shows one with about a 6 ft platform being pulled by 4 or 5 horses!

I agree with Allen. If you took what I wrote as a chewing out, please tell me what I should have said. Everything I wrote was just plain facts based on my experience or from books I have.

He didn't chew you one little bit. Just pointed out that he believes it to be a Baldwin.

A bit of history from my Dad. He said it took 4 men to operate a pull type combine.

A header puncher. A combine man, a sack sower and a cat skinner.

I disagree on the number of people to operate a pull type combine. There was a neighbor out north of chester montana who ran a 16 foot nichols and shephard combine alone. he had a 2x6 extending over the tractor an ihc 22-36 . he could drive the tractor and operate the height of the header by himself and it seemed to work good for him.

duane;

Thanks for the update. The combine Dad worked on didnt have a grain bin. They put the wheat in sacks and sewed them shut. Must have been quite an operation,no matter how it was done.
