Here are some pictures of a 454 J.D. row crop head on my 642 Ford.I took pictures of the star knife and the belts for those of you that have never seen one.I found out that these heads don't like grass even with new knives. Each row unit has one star rotating knife driven by a chain on the top.The belts grab the crop and the rotary knife cuts it against the stationary knife. The rotary knives last a long time but the stationary knife wears fairly fast. The stationary knife can be turned one time before it is wore out. There seem to be a lot of people on the board that has never seen one or how they work.Hope this helps

That header was the cats meow for picking up downed milo here in the plains areas. Wait till you have to change all those bearings and gears on hex shafts and that's when the fun begins :) Headers are adjustable we ran them on 40" rows. Can't expect those knives to not wear out when running low in dirt you know lol.

plate in there that changes the way the grass hits that stationary knife. My 653A has them Part# H122345 kinda pricey at $23.00 or so. For some reason the 453A I had didn't have them though. I can run as fast as the combine can digest the beans with the row head. Tom

Parts diagram maybe in reply to Haley, 11-15-2007 04:26:45
I can pull the pic up in JD parts but can't copy and paste it. If you have a parts account with a Deere dealer you can be set up online to use the parts catalog. Or open your email and I will send it. Tom

What is that rig used for? Assume soybeans or sunflowers? 38" rows?

Thanks,

Allan

soybeans, grain sorghum(milo), sunflowers. Anything in a row that is cut off and run through a combine. Usually they were 30 inch rows but maybe could be had bigger or smaller. Kind of a give away unit around here anymore, but they work really nice.

I ran rowcrop heads for several years. They will work in grass just as well as a cutter bar. IF the star knife and stationary knife are properly set. If you let the knives get out of adjustment, it will wear the knives and it will not cut grass. The stationary knife in the picture is wore out. Roger

JD8020,You are right, The stationary knives are wore out!I can't complain though,They have already cut 350 acres of beans since I put them on.I finished beans yesterday and will turn them before starting in grain sorghum.Beans were real dry(8 to 9.5 percent)and were still cutting good so I just let them run.

Haley, We found if we run the knives so they were fairly warm to the touch, the star knives and stationary knives stayed sharp much longer. It's almost a self sharpening type of thing. Occasionally we had to "adjust" the point of a star knife section with a hammer so all of the points would be at the same height and touch the stationary knife at the tip. It is important that the star knife tip is set to just touch the stationary knife. If you don't keep the knives set up properly, once the edge is off of the stationary knife it is impossible to keep them sharp. (I learned the hard way) Roger

Does Deere still make those? I remember when they came out but I don't think they made a big hit. Good idea though.
