Has anyone ever combined anything other than corn with filler plates installed on the cyl?I have got the feederhouse off of my 642 Ford and am thinking about putting filler plates in while I am there. The problem is that come wheat and soybean season I dont want to have to take them back out every time.I need the plates for high moisture corn and really need to hear from someone that has run with them both in and out. Please help!

We used to run filler plates in Deere combines. Most of the time it worked well. One had a bolt break while doing wheat. It completely destroyed the cylinder and concave. After that episode, we removed the plates when combining with high cylinder speeds. Roger

I used to work for a dealer and I would say in this county once the bars are installed 99% of the operators let them in. I talked to my cousin today and he has has Deere combines since the late 50's. Never took a set out.

I run a 9400 Deere with cylinder filler plates for corn and soybeans. I had to go to perforated
filler plates to prevent dust build up in soybeans. I leave them in all the time as one advantage of leaving them in for soybeans is it would be much harder for a rock to enter the threshing area.

We ran Olivers and Whites (7600, 8600, 8700). I never even heard of filler bars until I went to work for a Deere dealer.

I don't have an IH or (gasp!choke!) JD, but I have tried running with and without the filler plates in my NH 985 before I bought the 1400. The dust builds up inside the cylinder with the plates on in small grains. As long as the separator is running, you're OK, but the first time you shut it down, the cylinder gets out of balance, and it will about shake you out of the cab the next time yu start it. Beans should be OK with them in; I've never tried that. I can't remember if I ever put them back in the 985 or not. I only do dry corn- no high moisture, so I probably left them out. The 1400 has 1/2 of them out right now, mainly becasue it's such a PIA to get them out w/o taking the feederhouse off. (which I don't plan on doing!) 1/2 out lets enough dust out to work OK without shaking. Ran dry corn the last 3 years like that with no problems.

We run filler bars in on corn and wheat and out on soybeans. We've always done this on Deere's and we are currently running 9400s. As someone said capacity is diminished in soybeans with the bars in, especially tough threshing ones. If beans cut good though you'll notice little or no difference with the bars in. On a Deere two men can take bars out or put them in easily in two hours if everything goes right and you allow for a bolt to fall or a head to get rounded off. Hope this helps you make a decision with your Ford.

Hey larry806, Can you tell any difference in capacity in wheat with the plates in?The best wheat I cut is maybe 50bpa.Is there any reaon other than possible vibration at higher cyl speed that I shouldn't put them in and leave them in?Thanks for the reply.

i haven't used filler bars for a long time. leave them out. i've never noticed a difference in corn and you will have more capacity in other crops with them out.

Running beans with filler bars in is generally not a problem. However, in wheat your capacity will be greatly reduced as the cylinder will not "draw" the way it should. It is also somewhat risky as your cylinder rpm is so much higher. Vibration will also occur if dirt accumulates inside cylinder.
