I am about the only one stupid enough in this area to use a row crop head. I never had seen one until I bought this one, I have taken it apart from stem to stern and replaced all the bad bearings and worn out parts, aside from the expense, anything with this many moving parts is fun. I am going to go back together with it in the morning, and I plan on going by the book, what I am fishing for here, is that you guys that have had any experience with these do you have any advice for a rookie?

We use to use the all crops a lot on sunflowers, most of ours had another iron off to the side with a sprocket on that way you can run those chains a long time. Instead of adjusting the factory setting you just move the sprocket out on a sliding slot, hard to explain just like an idler pulley on a belt kind of a thing, hope it works well for you when we used ours on corn and on a 4400 it was alittle underpowered, 6600 handle much better, beans and flowers were no problem, take care.

Picked up lots of milo with one same size. We had to modify auger fingers to adjust some but later found out running a different feeder house chain helped the feeding problem in milo. Had a few extra feeder chains had picked up at a auction worth the money and never used them but sold those last year. You'll be surprised how long they run yet a bit loose.

When buying a manual for your rowhead. Look for one that matches your height control system auto header or dialamatic. What size machine are you going to run this on and what type of header speed control does it have. Tom

Sounds like us last year when we brought in a 653A. Didn't take too long to get used to. You have to have the head speed match your ground speed, much like keeping your reel speed correct for your ground speed. The best thing I can tell you is to get ahold of a manual for a row-crop head, they are worth having. The biggest advantage that I see from them is that there is reduced head shatter.

I already have a parts, service and owners manuals, they came from Deer. I priced new gatthering chain this a.m. so now I am looking at half links to see if its possable, if not these gatherers are going to have to run a little loose this year as I can not spend $1200 at this time.

Rowhead belts in reply to Animal, 10-24-2007 09:14:28
I have the B&M tensioner on mine and I have read and heard of people taking the belts up a link. Have to break the chain and get a splice. Don't do this if you installed new drive sprockets though.

I buy many parts thru shoup. Tom

Thanks Tom for all the advice I really apreciate it, I just got back from Mother Deer with an awful sore you know what... Thats all they offered for the chain was a connecting link, they could not even find number on the chain. How do you like the tensioners? I am using a 3300 this year, hope to use a 4400 next year.

Cause I can go a few hundred acres between adjustments. Takes a few hours to install. Mine are on the belts only. Sounds like u need a better dealer. John Deere has parts on line if you get signed up for it and your dealer has it. I use it frequently and especially for price comparisons. Tom
