I'm trying to get the engine (Diesel) running in a JD 4420 combine that has set for 5-6 years. I installed a rebuilt starter and new batteries. Have gotten a little rotation of the crankshaft, but the starter won't move it anymore. I'm thinking about tying the valves open. Would there be any problem is doing this, if I pulled the push rods? Any other thoughts on getting it moving would be appreciated.

Well, I think I'd pull the injectors. Probably easier than "tying the valves open". If its sat that long, the injection pump and injectors are probably full of varnish and sludge. I worked on a 4400 w/ a 329 engine for 2 days once, before giving up and spending $800 to have the pump and injectors gone through. Pulling the injectors would be a fairly straightforward way of relieving compression so you can see what's going on. Jim.
