Anybody have any experience or input on these combines? I have been told the 818's weren't worth a crap but the 717's were pretty good. Looking at a 2000 hour 709 with a 717 combine on it. Would like the power unit for my 858 sheller and the chopping as well, but I have to pay for the low hours. Would like to make sure I might like the 717 combine, it's a huge step up in operatability from the 315. Any input would be great, thank you!!

We run a 717 on a 708 with a 4 row narrow head and a 13 foot flex head in beans. It does pretty well but we certainly won"t keep up with larger or more modern combines. I would just be on the lookout for cracks in the tin and rust on the bottom of the grain tank. The higher houred ones seem to crack and it doesn"t take too much moisture to rust out the bottom of the grain tank. Ours has done well overall and was a step up from the 702D and 710 combine.

The combine is completely mint, 2007 hours, one owner with paperwork, has ALWAYS been stored inside and pressure cleaned after every season. IT SHOWS. I couldn't believe it when I saw it for the first time. The guy talked it up, but I realized then that there wasn't any exaggerations. The combine, 844 head, and 709 RWA were bought together and have never been separated. He built a new RWA axle and uses 24" wheels in place of the original 12's, incredible looks and he has 18.4 rice tires dualed in the front, with a piece of angle iron between the wheels as a mud scraper. He said he was able to combine when everyone else had to quit. He still has the original tires and rims, so I can swap them if I want to chop or something.

Now that my 708 took a crap (Saturday the 15th), suddenly I have greater justification for it. I kinda got screwed on that deal.

I would be the cousin that Nates90 was talking about, I dont have much experience myself with the 717 combine but our grandpa ran one on a 708 for years and pushed a 4 row John Deere cornhead with it and it did a good job, he sold it because it was getting pretty worn out and moved up to a 6620 John Deere. As far as comparing the 717 to the 818 I couldnt say. If you are getting a good low houred power unit and if the combine itself is in good shape as far as the rasp bars, seives, and walkers go I would say you probably cant go wrong.

I know the 709 with the allis diesel is a heck of a good machine. My cousin runs one for silage cutting. Only problem that he has had with it is that there is a rubber bushing thing that runs the hydrualic pump and the pully that runs the attachment. As far as the combine, Im not sure but I can ask my cousin, he is a pretty big UNI person.
