I'm running an 11L-16x31 implement tire on the rear of my combine. In a wet fall like last year, these tires want to skid and bury down rather than turn and then the front tires begin to paw. I want to go to a tractor tire bar tread, mounted backwards, to improve mobility. I see many larger 2WD combines that use this configuration. The Firestone dealer can get me into a 12.4-16x37 that will fit my rims. Price is $265 each.

What do you guys think? Will it actually improve mobility in soft conditions? Any less expensive way to go?

PS. Thanks for everyones views on my other post in reference to grain tank extensions.

You could probably find a good pair of swather tires at a salvage yard, a lot of swathers had the 6 bolt wheels, that all you have to do is bolt them on. Our old hesston 280 had a 7.5-18 and the 420's had like a 12.5-15 both with six bolt wheels, probably get a pair for 100 bucks wheels and all, just a thought.

You we be real impressed with that setup. The traction tire keeps rolling over the top where a ribbed tire will start pushing stalks ahead of it and that makes the drive tires pull harder which you don't need in muddy conditions. I would sell you a Titan for around $200 but then maybe it needs a tube I not sure and there would be mounting. You might check salvage yards and see about buying tires and wheels that would fit your machine.
