This is my first year planting any kind of row crop and doing it with a JD494 planter set at 30" rows. Here are some pictures of the soybean I planted last Saturday. I planted them at 30" and then split the rows again to get 15" rows. At the end of the field the planter turns a bit inside the tractor so my 2nd pass acually replanted over the first pass. My question is sould I plant some rows across these to get the plant pop up and help this end of the field canopy over quicker or will I have to many plants to close and choke out the ones that are already in. Also I have almost a full extra bag of seed so unless I use it, it's wasted. Thanks

Dr. Dumphy at NC State has done a lot of research on soybean pop's for the last several years. Data is showing you can go right on down with your population and still have a good yield. They look terrible when they first emerge but they will go ahead and canopy over.

Camera is a Nikon Coolpix 880. Love the camera. Bought it used on ebay.

I speak to you as a trained agronomist and a former soybean farmer. You will do more harm through over populating a bean field than through slight under-population. If you have a bean in an average of every 36 square inches you are about right. Half that, if well spaced, can give you record yields. That's 2 to 4 beans per square foot. Don't re-plant unless you are UNDER that figure. Do some spot checking, and don't worry about a few gaps. From your pictures I'd say you are in good shape. Are your beans Roundup ready? Regardless, you are committed to chemical weed control, unless you are good with a hoe. Really, that is the primary advantage of an early canopy. Where are you? The farther north you are, the more advantage you find with narrow rows. It has to do with the angle of the sun. If you are south of the Wisconsin state line narrow beans will not give you that much advantage.

Those are outstanding pictures. I feel as though I'm standing in the field beside the planter! What kind of camera do you have?; or is it the person taking the pics that makes the difference.

Soybeans are very forgiving -they will compensate for spaces within the row. Corn does not do that. Extra seed can be planted nest year.

Looks good, Soybeans will fill in this, it will be kind of like the twin row concept 30 or 36 inch rows with two rows 8 inches apart in the middle. I wouldn't go out there now unless you have some places with gaps of a foot or more in the row. Best wishes, Brad
