Who makes the best combines? To me even as a farmer they do about the same quality job. I am also planning to buy a combine that has less than 1000 threshing hours or new to use on 450 acres of corn 350 of soybeans and 200 of wheat. I have a 1980's 7720 titan 2 with PRWD and might be interested in another JD but dont know wheter STS really stands for STRATEGIC TECHNOLEDGY STOLEN or SINGLE TINE SEPERATION if you catch my drift. But color doesnt matter as long as its reliable and does a good job.
Thanks AJZ all information is appreciated.

John Howell, the big farm and electrical guy here in mid Michigan traded his fleet of John Deere 9500s for CaseIH 2388s. His guys said that they 9500s were having "some problems."

Here in Spain the STS don't make a good job. In wheat and barley, they lost a lot of grain. Some people say it's because the heat of spain ( I don't know). No problem with corn, only the fuel consumption ( very important in spain ), and the engine. I think John Deere engines aren't good for combines. A lot of engines was broken this summer.

Well, I guess it depends. Are you talking of old pull types, old self propelleds, rotaries? For pull types, I like my good ol' John Deere 30. Said to probably have the cleanest grain. For the self propelleds, I like my John Deere 45EB, except that because of neglect from the previous owner (bad oil) my transmission is worn out.

Gleaners are by far the best. Don't look at another combine unless it is silver

Who makes the best combine is just a matter of everybody's opinion. We have heard from owners and operaters good things abouth the STS and bad things about them. A major costom combine operator around here traded 21 CASE 2388's in for the John Deere STS machines last year. He has already orderd his second bunch this year, so they must work pretty good. We have a John Deere CTS II and a John 8820. For us the CTS machine has proven to be the best for our farm practices. The STS combines are completely new for John Deere so we are going to wait about 3 or 4 more years before we try one. That is so John Deere gets the bugs worked out of them. We switched from Massey to John Deere about 1981 because John Deere combines outlasted the Masseys at the time. Gleaner lost their reputation around here when they introduced the N6 and N7 combines. I have never seen a new gleaner out in the field. Massey also lost their combine market share around here because they would only last 1,000 hrs befor they were worn out. I only know of one farm that still runs Massey 760 combines. Almost everybody else around here runs either John Deere or Case International and both kinds of combines have proven to be reliable. To me, the best combine made today is the John Deere 9650 CTS. If you want to know who made or makes the best combines, just ask yourself "How did Massey and Gleaner lose their market share to John Deere and Case IH." I am not putting down the Massey and Gleaner combines made today. They might and probably are just as good as machines as the John Deere and Case combines but their reputation was damaged some time ago by the combines they used to make.

Deutz is what hurt Gleaner the most. The early N's had problems but later were much better just like IH and their early rotaries. When Deutz stopped producing the conventionals when there was still a demand that was a mistake but when Deutz turned their back on their dealers that was the biggest mistake and many started selling Ford, White, and even CaseIH instead. Agco is trying to regain market share but that is a very tough thing to do starting from the bottom.

Gleaner is the easiest to work on if you do your own repairs.

I hear the Case machines are also pretty simple. JD is a good machine, but they didn't build them to be owner serviced! Not familiar with the STS tho, when I look at the rotor I see a lot more than one 'tine' anyhow so I just don't get that whole deal.

Crop prices must be good where you live, 1000 acres doesn't pay a $200,000 combine where I live.
