We're looking at planting corn for the first time, is it going to present a problem planting with a JD 7000 8 row planter and picking with a 6-row header? My planter has markers, just wondering how much variation a corn header can stand between rows.

I plant with a 6 row and pick with a 4 row. No problam. Just make sure you do as mentioned before, plant end rows in Multibles of 6.

plant your end rows or whatever into a mulitple of your corn header. so plant 24 rows, it will work out.

You will have some wide guess rows from time to time, but that's not a huge problem unless they got really way off. The biggest problems come when following a countour, or a turn on an uneven endrow. The header just can't take much variance at all while it's turning. Try to avoid that as much as possible and you'll be fine. We've shelled corn with a 38" row header behind a 36" row planter before with no problems.

Some years back I was at a IH dealer. And they had a new 5 row wide corn head the salesman said it was for the bigger machines. My understanding was it was to so the tires would go down the center of the rows instead of on top. But i never seen one used.

It's fairly common around here. Works fine, nice if you can plant straight. Doing contures or hills make it a little more interesting, but it works.

I've seen this done a couple times just depends how straight you can drive when you plant and how loose your planter tractor steering is my cousin could plant about as sraight a row as you could imagine he never looked back but if you're like me I just had to look back and everytime I did my hand would pull the steering wheel causing a loop that was what dad taught us to always look back to make sure things were ok. Normally what you're asking is not a good practice there's just not a lot of room for variance there because every round you make the problem compounds itself because the odd spacing moves on you. Draw it out on a piece of paper. Good luck, CT.
